Boryspil (Ukrainian Бориспіль ; Russian Борисполь / Borispol ) is a city in Ukraine in the Kiev Oblast with 55,894 inhabitants (2006). It is located around 30 kilometers south-east of Kiev and is the capital of the raion of the same name .
Boryspil was first mentioned at the end of the 16th century. A settlement can be traced back to the middle of the 12th century. It was not until 1956 that city rights were granted. The name is of Greek origin; it is made up of Borysthenes, the ancient Greek name of the Dnepr river , and -polis for city in initially Russified (-pol), then Ukrainized form.
Kiev International Airport ( IATA code : KBP) is located at Boryspil ; The Kiev – Poltava railway has been running in the north of the city since 1901 .
