Terminal for international flights

The Kiev-airport Boryspil ( Ukrainian Міжнародний аеропорт "Бориспіль" ; Russian Международный аэропорт Борисполь ) is the largest international commercial airport of the Ukrainian capital Kiev . It is the main airport in the country and is located in the urban area of Boryspil 29 km east of Kiev city center.

Other airports in the vicinity are the smaller Kiev-Schuljany Airport, which is mainly used for domestic flights and also serves as a base for the low-cost airline Wizz Air , and the cargo and factory airport Kiev-Hostomel to the north-west .

history

The history of the airport begins with the decision N1832 of the Council of Ministers of the Ukrainian SSR on June 22, 1959 to open a civil airport on the site of a former military airfield .

The first scheduled flight Moscow- Kiev-Moscow took place on July 1, 1959. This flight was carried out with a Tupolev Tu-104 , which carried 100 passengers and 1600 kg of cargo. Further scheduled flights followed from August 15, 1960, starting with the Leningrad- Kiev-Leningrad line. Kiev Airport was the first airport on the territory of the USSR to be equipped with an instrument landing system in 1979 . Category II (CAT II) landings could already be carried out here from March of the same year. This sometimes earned it a reputation as a test site for civil aviation.

Passenger terminal building

Despite the economic crisis and ailing state finances, the airport was expanded for the 2012 European Football Championship . At the beginning of July 2019, two terminals were available for passenger handling:

  • Terminal D for domestic, international flights and VIP passengers
  • Terminal F for cheap flights

Disused terminals:

  • Terminal A (formerly for domestic flights)
  • Terminal B (formerly for international flights)
  • Terminal C (formerly for VIP passengers)

The newly built Terminal D opened on May 28, 2012. During the European Football Championship, it was initially intended to act as a "hub" for European Championship tourists. Terminal D is, however, one kilometer away from the previous handling halls. After Terminal D opened, Terminals A, B and C were closed. Further terminal buildings are planned for the distant future; A new terminal for the handling of the Airbus A380 is to be built by 2024 , for the construction of which the old terminals B and F have to be demolished.

In July 2017, Ryanair broke off negotiations after the airport operators refused to respond to claims that would have been inconsistent with existing rules and laws (instead of paying fees to the airport operator like other airlines, Ryanair demanded a payout per passenger; Ryanair demanded from the airport operator free services such as ticketing and check-in) and wanted to be involved in the duty-free sales as a percentage. Ryanair had already sold tickets for the new route, but had to row back from winter 2017. Ryanair has been offering connections to and from Boryspil since autumn 2018.

Transport links

The airport is connected to the city of Kiev via the M 03 trunk road , on which the "Skybus" bus connection connects the airport with the Charkiwska metro station in Kiev on the left bank and the main train station in the city center. Since December 2018, there has been a train connection by rail, which runs about every hour at night and twice an hour during the day in about 40 minutes via Darnytsya station to Kiev main station.
