history

Even before 1924, all possibilities were available to start passenger traffic in the Ukraine and at Kiev-Schuljany Airport. The focus of the flights was on the city of Kharkov, the then Ukrainian capital. Therefore, the first route was Kharkov - Poltava - Kiev - Kharkov - Poltava - Kremenchug - Odessa .

In Kiev, a military airfield was set up near the village of Shulyany. On May 25, 1924, the first test flight with a Dornier Merkur with the nickname “Red Chemist” of the airline Ukrwosduchput followed, lasting 3 hours and 20 minutes. Since the beginning of June 1924, two weekly scheduled flights between Kharkov and Kiev were on the schedule. At that time the base was the size of an airfield, today's airport did not yet exist.

While the airport was only used for domestic flights in Soviet times, this changed after independence and there were more international flights. The number continued to increase in the 2000s with the boom in civil aviation in Ukraine. On March 27, Hungary's low-cost airline , Wizz Air , moved its base from Kiev-Boryspil Airport to Kiev-Schuljany Airport. This was followed by a large increase in passenger numbers and the approval of all flights around the clock.

On May 17, 2012 the new “A” terminal was opened by the Ukrainian Vice-Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure Borys Kolesnikow , which is intended for handling all international flights. The terminal is equipped with modern equipment, including security checks and baggage handling . The old "B" terminal will only be used for national flights.

In the entire year 2012, the passenger traffic at the airport amounted to 862,000 passengers. This corresponds to an increase of 83.4% compared to 2011. This is mainly due to the larger offer and the 2012 European Football Championship . The most popular foreign arrival points were Treviso , Dortmund , Moscow, Memmingen and Katowice Airport .

Airlines and Destinations

Since the end of March 2011, Kiew-Schuljany has also served as the basis for the low-cost airline Wizz Air, which until then had started from the larger Kiev-Boryspil airport. In addition, other airlines such as Transaero and Utair -Ukraine moved their bases from Boryspil Airport to Shulyany Airport. In addition, the airport is used by various other companies, mainly for domestic flights.
