Fastiw ( Ukrainian Фастів ; Russian Фастов Fastow ) is a city in the Ukrainian Oblast of Kiev with about 46,000 inhabitants (2006).
Geographical location
Fastiw is located at an altitude of 199 m on the bank of the Unawa ( Унава ), an 87 km long right tributary of the Irpin , about 64 kilometers southwest of Kiev .
The regional roads P – 04 and P – 19 and the territorial roads T – 10–13 and T – 10–28 run through the city .
history
Fastiw was first mentioned as a small town in 1390 . After the construction of the railway in 1870, the village became an important transport center to the west. In a pogrom during the Russian Civil War in the summer of 1919, the White Army killed 1,500 Jews here as they advanced from the Don region towards Moscow . Fastiw was officially recognized as a city in 1938. In 1941 the German Einsatzgruppe C under Paul Blobel murdered “all Jews between the ages of 12 and 60”.
