Quiet Sun

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Quiet Sun was a British progressive rock / jazz-rock - band from the Canterbury Scene consisting of Phil Manzanera ( guitar ), Bill MacCormick ( bass ), Dave Jarrett ( keyboards ) and Charles Hayward ( drums ).

history

Formed out of a college band called Pooh and the Ostrich Feather , Quiet Sun was formed in 1970 after MacCormick befriended Robert Wyatt , the son of a friend of his mother's. Like Soft Machine , the band integrated jazz elements and sparkling keyboards into their complex music; Manzanera's energetic guitar playing clearly distinguished her from Soft Machine, which (apart from bass guitar) had not used a guitar on their regular albums until their 1975 album Bundles and used wind instruments as a melody carrier in addition to keyboards.

Quiet Sun broke up in 1972 when Manzanera joined the newly formed group Roxy Music ; Hayward first became a member of Gong and later formed This Heat , MacCormick formed Matching Mole with Robert Wyatt, Phil Miller, and Dave Sinclair , and Jarrett became a math lecturer. Charles Hayward also worked as a guest drummer in the band Raincoats on their LP Odyshape in 1981 .

Parallel to the recordings for his first solo album Diamond Head , Manzanera called the former Quiet Sun band members back together in January 1975, who then recorded their only, critically acclaimed mainstream album, that of the New Musical Express, together with Brian Eno in the same studio was named album of the month.
