Charles Hayward

Charles Hayward (born 1951 ) is a British drummer who first became known as the leader of the experimental rock band This Heat . He then devoted himself to solo projects and worked with numerous fusion and alternative rock bands.

Live and act

Hayward started playing drums when he was eleven. Between 1970 and 1972 he was a member of Quiet Sun . He then performed with Gong without appearing on an album. In 1976 he began practicing with Charles Bullen and Gareth Williams. The group played material until 1978, but did not release a first album as This Heat until 1979. After the release of the second album Deceit (1981), the band broke up.

Hayward worked as a studio musician for Lora Logic , The Raincoats and Everything but the Girl , before recording several albums for Recommended with bassist Trefor Goronwy and tape manipulator Stephen Rickard as Camberwell Now . When the band broke up in 1987, Hayward began a solo career. The debut album Survive the Gesture (1987) was followed by Skew-whiff (1989) Switch on War (1991) and My Secret Alphabet (1993, with bassist Nick Doyne-Ditmas). In 1998 Fred Frith and Bill Laswell brought him to the band Massacre , which had released five albums by 2013. Heiner Goebbels engaged him for his project The Man in the Elevator (ECM 1988). In 2001 he worked as a drummer in Ted Milton's band Blurt .
