This Heat was an experimental British rock band . The trio was founded in 1976 by multi-instrumentalists and sound artists Charles Bullen, Charles Hayward and Gareth Williams in Camberwell , London . This Heat was modeled on German Krautrock bands such as Can and Faust , the dub pioneer Lee "Scratch" Perry and the avant-garde group Throbbing Gristle . This Heat's work ranges between post-punk , industrial , noise , ambient and electro-acoustic music and is considered to be groundbreaking for the post-rock genre .

Band history

In 1977 John Peel played demo recordings on his radio show This Heat recorded at Hayward's parents' home. During this time, the band also made recordings with the Ghanaian percussionist Mario Boyer Diekuuroh, parts of which appeared on a cassette for the French experimental rock magazine Tago Mago in 1982 , along with recordings by Albert Marcoeur. The group later set up a studio in a former cold store in Brixton .

In 1979 the first, very experimental album This Heat was released , recorded between 1976 and 1978. The following year the EP Health and Efficiency came out, in 1981 the band's second and final album, Deceit .

Although the later recordings were more oriented towards punk , there was no commercial success. After a last European tour, the group split up in 1982.

In 1988 the Peel Sessions were published (again with bonus material in 1996). In 1993, previously unreleased recordings of This Heat came under the title Repeat on the market. The 6-CD box Out of Cold Storage from 2006 contains all of the band's publications up to then.

Gareth Williams died of cancer on December 24, 2001 at the age of 48.

Between 2016 and 2019, Charles Bullen and Charles Hayward performed under the names This Is Not This Heat.
