Univers Zéro is a Belgian rock-in-opposition band that is characterized by its dark style and influences of 20th century chamber music .

Band history

It was founded in 1974 by drummer Daniel Denis and was a founding member of the European musicians' movement Rock In Opposition, whose aim was to build up a network for the dissemination of sophisticated music as a counterpoint to the then dominant disco and punk music. One of the co-founders was Roger Trigaux , who left the band after the second album Heresie and then founded his band Present .

Univers Zéro dissolved in 1987, but merged again in 1999. In the meantime, drummer Daniel Denis had released two solo albums and joined Art Zoyd , a similarly dark band from France. Since 1999 there have been three further studio releases, which are described as less threatening by the fans and, although the shorter track lengths were initially viewed with skepticism, were nonetheless received very favorably.

On September 20, 2009, Present and Univers Zéro took to the stage together for the first time as part of the Rock-In-Opposition Festival at the Maison de la Musique de Cap Découverte by Le Garric in France, which was co-organized by Roger Trigaux. Two years later, in the same place, the three Belgian groups Univers Zéro, Present and Aranis united to form the 17-member formation Once Upon a Time in Belgium .

style

In addition to influences from Béla Bartók and Igor Stravinsky , the group also names lesser-known composers such as the Belgian Albert Huybrechts as inspiration .

The releases in the 1980s were characterized by instruments such as oboe , spinet , harmonium and mellotron , which shaped the band's recognition value . Later on, synthesizers and electric guitars were the focus. The style-defining complexity remained true to it.
