Ben Rice
Ben Rice (* 1972 in Tiverton , Devon ) is an English writer.
Life
Ben Rice grew up in Devon. He attended Blundell's School in Tiverton, then studied English literature at Newcastle University and Wadham College of Oxford University . He attended the Creative Writing Course at the University of East Anglia in Norwich .
His partner is from Lightning Ridge , Australia. Ben Rice lived in London after his studies and now works as an English teacher in Australia.

His novella Pobby and Dingan was first published in 2000 in the British literary magazine Granta. A hardback was published in the same year by the London publisher Jonathan Cape and in the United States by Knopf a few months later . A paperback edition was published in 2002 along with the short story Specks in the Sky , which first appeared in The New Yorker , in 2002 by Vintage. Pobby and Dingan is set in Lightning Ridge, a small impoverished Australian town in New South Wales that was formed because of a nearby opal field . A girl loses her two fantasy friends , which upsets life in her family and the city.
Translations of the novella have appeared in Germany ( Pobby and Dingan , translation Giovanni and Ditte Bandini ), France ( Pobby et Dingan , translation Sabine Porte), the Netherlands ( Pobby en Dingan , translation Tinke Davids ), Poland ( Pobby i Dingan , translation Lech Jęczmyk), Portugal ( Pobby e Dingan , translation José Lima), Romania ( Pobby şi Dingan , translation Dan Ciobanu) and Spain ( Pobby i Dingan , translation Eduard Castaño Montserrat).
Pobby and Dingan was filmed by Peter Cattaneo and was released as Opal Dream in 2006 with good reviews . One of his short stories, Look at Me I'm Beautiful , was also filmed in 2005 by Paul Gay . Rice was also involved in the films as a screenwriter .
Granta listed Ben Rice as one of the top 20 young British novelists in 2003.
A novel by Rice, also set in Australia, called Etiquette, was announced by Faber & Faber for 2008. Although an ISBN has already been published here , the book was never published.
