The University of Applied Sciences for Intercultural Theology Hermannsburg (FIT), founded on October 2, 2012, is a state-recognized and accredited Protestant educational institution with currently three courses. Its foundation takes into account the knowledge that transnational migration movements and the intensified encounter and penetration of different cultures in the course of globalization require a high degree of intercultural communication skills. Its aim is to bring the tradition of critical Protestant and Lutheran theologies into a dialogue with pentecostal and charismatic movements, to be an interface between training at the Protestant faculties and the differently shaped theologies of Africa, Asia and Latin America and to contribute to intercultural encounter and to contribute to integration.

The FIT is a legally dependent institution of the Evangelical Lutheran Missionswerk in Lower Saxony (ELM), which, as a foundation under private law, is a joint institution of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hanover, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Braunschweig and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Schaumburg-Lippe is. The forerunner institution of the FIT was the Hermannsburg Missionary Seminar, which closed in August 2012 and has trained theologians for service in the worldwide Church for over 160 years.

Goal setting

In research and teaching, the University of Applied Sciences for Intercultural Theology pursues the goal of being able to deal appropriately and reflectively with the challenges of Christian plurality that arise from the intensifying interactions of African, Asian, Latin American and European Christianity variants. This is intended to serve a future-oriented ecumenical cooperation. FIT qualifies people for communication and diaconal practice of the gospel in international and intercultural contexts and sees itself as a competence center for intercultural theology, missiology and ecumenism.

FIT is also represented in the Societas Oecumenica (a cooperation between North German mission and religious studies institutions).

Library

The university library focuses on intercultural theology, missiology, Christian history, religious studies, biblical studies, migration, social work and development work. The inventory comprises 65,000 volumes. In addition, extensive online research tools are available on the homepage (online catalog OPAC, access to e-books with 700 titles, 11 databases, 3 lexicons and 24 electronic journals). The inventory build-up is based on the goals and content of the FIT degree programs. Since German and English are the language of instruction, the library's holdings are being built up with both German and English-language literature.

The library has a history of more than 150 years. Their historically grown holdings therefore offer a biblical collection in addition to mission history literature. Until the founding of the university of applied sciences it was the scientific library for the Ev.-luth. Missionswerk in Niedersachsen (ELM) and the mission seminar.

The university library is a member of the joint library network (GBV) of the states of Bremen, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Schleswig-Holstein, Thuringia and the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation based in Göttingen and catalogs its holdings in the joint network catalog. In addition, the university library is integrated into the interlibrary loan system of German libraries.
