history
The HKS Ottersberg was founded in 1967 as a free art study site . In 1984 it was recognized by the state. The university is run by a not-for-profit GmbH whose shareholders are primarily practice facilities in which students and graduates work. The HKS Ottersberg is one of the largest training centers for art therapists in Europe. The four Bachelor courses offered are: “Art in the Social. Art Therapy "," Dance and Theater in the Social. Dance Pedagogy / Theater Pedagogy ”,“ Social Work ”and“ Fine Art ”. The bachelor's degree is obtained.
The course lasts between seven and eight semesters. Since 2011, a one-year master’s degree in "Art and Theater in the Social" (MA / MFA) has been offered. It is designed project-oriented and aims at an artistic-scientific specialization in selected practical fields. In addition, since 2019 there has been the advanced master’s course "Artful Leadership", which aims to further qualify managers.
The graduates work in a wide variety of social milieus, in clinics and medical aftercare facilities, in youth, handicapped and elderly care, in curative educational institutions, in aid for addicts and offenders, in educational institutions, schools, in sociocultural projects, in theaters and as freelance artists and art therapists.

At the University of Arts and Social Sciences, Ottersberg, four courses are currently offered: “ Art in the social world . Art Therapy and Art Education "," Theater Education . Theater in the Social ”and“ Fine Art ”. The degree programs that previously ended with a diploma were converted to the Bachelor system on September 1, 2007 due to the Bologna Process . Since autumn 2011, the master's degree "Art and Theater in the Social" has been offered.
- Art in the social. Art Therapy and Art Education (KS)
Duration: 4 years (12 trimesters). The course concludes with a Bachelor of Arts .
- Theater education. Theater in the social (TS)
Duration: 4 years (12 trimesters). The course also ends with a Bachelor of Arts.
- Fine Arts (FK)
Duration: 4 years (12 trimesters). The course concludes with a Bachelor of Fine Arts .
- Art and Theater in the Social (MA / MFA)
Duration: 1 year, part-time 2 years. Degrees are the Master of Arts or the Master of Fine Arts.
further education
Since 2005, the HKS has been offering a one-year advanced training course in "clinical anthroposophical art therapy" in cooperation with the Herdecke community hospital .
Institutes
The Institute for Art Therapy and Research / Art and Theater in the social is an affiliated institute of HKS. It designs practice-oriented research projects, carries them out or accompanies them.
