Openfire (originally Wildfire and Jive Messenger ) is an XMPP server written in the Java programming language and published under the Apache license 2.0.

General

Thanks to its Java implementation, the Openfire server is almost platform-independent and can be easily installed on all operating systems with the help of setup files. The manufacturer Jive Software also developed the Spark XMPP client, which covers all features of Openfire, but of course any other client with XMPP support can be used. The connection between the server and client can be unencrypted or encrypted with SSL / TLS . Messages, user details and user settings are stored in the supplied database based on Apache Derby , or any other database management system with JDBC-Support can be used. Openfire supports the LDAP protocol and can therefore be used together with Active Directory .

The server is set up and managed via a web interface, which is available on ports 9090 (HTTP) and 9091 (HTTPS). This interface can be used to set up users and rooms, install plugins and change other server settings. The current optional plugins can be used to forward offline messages, filter messages with specific content (e.g. spam), send user notifications for new e-mails or the message of the day. A plug-in enables the server-side integration of ICQ , AIM , MSN , Yahoo and Google Talk . There is also a plug-in that enables SIP telephony via the XMPP client Spark with a Red5 (Flash) extension.
