Spark is a free instant messaging - client , which in Java was written.
Spark uses the XML- based messaging protocol XMPP . This makes it possible, among other things, to send files and text messages to other users via the Internet or a local network , as well as to make audio and video calls. The messenger can be used stand-alone or as a browser plug-in in various web browsers . The supported range of functions includes the possibility of group chats , the integration of IP telephony and a spell check .
By using the Java-based Openfire XMPP server from the same manufacturer or other XMPP server software, a communication infrastructure that is separate from the Internet can be set up, which meets increased security requirements, making Spark particularly suitable for use in companies. However, it is also possible to use the offer of a public Jabber server with Spark.
In addition to free support from the Internet forum of the user community , reference is also made to commercial support from the companies Version 2 Software and Contegix . Support from Jive Software, the original developers of the software, was apparently discontinued as part of the conversion of the project into a purely community project.
By using the XMPP protocol, Spark supports communication with AOL Instant Messenger , ICQ , XMPP / Jabber , MSN Messenger and Yahoo Messenger through so-called transports .
