Wolf Simon

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wolf Simon (born April 17, 1962 in Essen ) is a German drummer and photographer .

Life

Simon began playing the drums in 1974 and was a member of local bands in Essen from 1976 before he joined his first professional band Okay (later Copes , then Hand in Hand ) through a newspaper advertisement in 1980 and received a recording contract with them. The formation recorded three albums and completed several tours in support of Tina Turner , Mink deVille , Black Uhuru and the Zeltinger Band . Turner's drummer Jack Bruno had a strong influence on Simon in 1982 with his song-oriented style. In 1984, Simon was so well established in the German studio and live scene that he decided not to study drums at PIT in Los Angeles. Instead, he took lessons from Gary Chaffee, Peter Erskine and Enzo Todesco in the years to come .

In 1983 Wolf Simon played with the band Bröselmaschine before he was a founding member of the Klaus Lage Band in the autumn of the same year ; their first release was the single 1000 und 1 Nacht (Zoom!) . Simon has been connected to Cologne through many musical projects since 1984 and has worked with some of the city's most prominent artists and bands, such as Tommy Engel , Zeltinger, LSE and Klaus “Major” Heuser . From 2015 to 2018 he was a permanent member of the Cologne band Höhner , on whose publications he had already participated since the album Viva Colonia .

To date, the musician has contributed to numerous LP and CD releases and many film, TV and theater soundtracks. He received several gold and platinum awards (including for his work with the Klaus Lage Band and with Purple Schulz ) as well as the Ampex Golden Reel Award.

Simon appeared as a permanent member of numerous formations such as the Klaus Lage Band, Thomas Blug Band, Purple Schulz or Asanisimasa as well as through his participation in studio sessions and tours of national and international artists such as Billy Bang , Gitte Haenning , Albert Mangelsdorff , Jennifer Rush , TM Stevens , Wolfgang Petry , Sweetbox , Ina Deter , Therion , Anne Haigis , Doro Pesch , DePhazz , Ute Freudenberg , Axxis , Michel van Dyke , Zoff , Howard Carpendale , I Muvrini , Udo Lindenberg , Arno Steffen , Bobby Kimball , LSE, Jon Lord and many others. Wolf Simon worked as musical director for Tic Tac Toe (1997–1998) and the production Tabaluga & Lilli (1999–2001) by Peter Maffay . In 2002 he founded his own all-star formation Real Groove Band (2007 under the name Funk Alliance, 2008 as Power Experience), which until 2009 included numerous changing members, including Kirk Douglas ( The Roots ) , Bobby Kimball, the Tower of Power Members Brent Carter and Norbert Stachel, Haddaway , Randy Hansen and TM Stevens. Since 2003 he has worked closely with the guitarist Thomas Blug on the projects Thomas Blug Band, Blug plays Hendrix and Rockanarchy of the 70s . Also since 2003, Simon and bassist Frank Itt formed the rhythm section of Howard Carpendale's band.

Since 2012 he has organized the Unger Uns concert series together with the Cologne event agency sem4u, in which artists such as Klaus Lage, Nico Gomez, Purple Schulz, Regy Clasen , Pe Werner , Riccardo Doppio, Johnny Logan , Yvonne Rüller and many others performed.

As a lecturer for drums and band coaching, Simon worked at the Robert Schumann University in Düsseldorf since 2004 and at the Institute for Music at the University of Osnabrück since 2006 . He is currently part of the professional teaching network MusicMonster.de and regularly gives workshops on drum recording, rhythm sections and shuffle.

From 1989 onwards, Simon worked increasingly as a professional photographer in addition to his music career, mainly in advertising and at times also with his own photo studio, which he ran until 1997. Since 2016, his focus on photography has increasingly turned towards people / portraits.

In 1996, Simon and Eckhard Beste founded the company Hearsafe in Cologne, which initially developed high-quality hearing protection for musicians and brought them onto the market. Beste and Simon significantly further developed the in-ear monitoring system, which was not yet ready for the market at the time, and led it to its current form, in particular through numerous innovations in the custom-made headphones. The company was a pioneer in in-ear monitoring in Europe.

Wolf Simon is married and has two sons.

Wolf Simon has been playing exclusively Tama Starclassic drums, Meinl cymbals and Evans heads since 1997. He is also an advertising medium for Regal Tip (since 1985) and 2Box.
