United States Chess League 2005
The United States Chess League 2005 was the first edition of the United States Chess League , the US team championship in chess.
The championship was the team of the Baltimore Kingfishers , the competition was held with the eight founding members Baltimore Kingfishers, New York Knights , Boston Blitz , Philadelphia Inventors , San Francisco Mechanics , Miami Sharks , Dallas Destiny and Carolina Cobras (based in Durham (North Carolina) ) .

Game dates
The competitions of the preliminary round ( regular season ) took place on August 31, 7, 14, 21 and 28 September, 5, 12, 19 and 26 October and on November 2, 2005. The semi-finals were played on November 9th, the final on November 23rd. All competitions were played on the Internet Chess Club server .
mode
The eight participating teams were divided into two groups of four ( Eastern Division and Western Division ). Each team played twice against the members of the same group and once against the teams in the other group. The number of team points (one point for a win, half a point for a draw, no point for a defeat), then the number of board points (one point for a win, half a point for a draw, no Point for defeat). The first two of each group qualified for the final round ( playoff ), which was played in the knockout system .

Western Division
Here, too, the two semi-finalists, San Francisco and Miami, were determined before the last round. Two Miami Sharks competitions could not be ended normally and were rated 2: 2 by agreement with the opponents. In the competition against Dallas Destiny in the third round, the Internet connection failed, the competition of the ninth round against the Carolina Cobras could not be played because of the hurricane Wilma .

Semifinals
In both semifinals, the runners-up prevailed. While Baltimore won against New York in the preliminary round, Miami had lost both preliminary round games against San Francisco.

The nominal outsider Baltimore landed a clear victory against Miami.
Awards
Most Valuable Player
The title of Most Valuable Player (MVP) was awarded on the basis of the preliminary round results. A player received four points for a winning game on the first board, four points were deducted for a defeat. On the second board, three plus or minus points were awarded, and two each on the third and fourth board. In addition, one point was credited for each winning and drawing game achieved with the black pieces. Pascal Charbonneau (Baltimore) won the title with 16 points, followed by Elvin Wilson (Philadelphia) with 14 points and Gregory Baylovsky (New York) with 13 points.
All star teams
Two All Star Teams were nominated. The first team consisted of Pascal Charbonneau, Lev Milman (Carolina), Gregory Baylovsky and Elvin Wilson, the second Julio Becerra (Miami), Tegshsuren Enkhbat (Baltimore), David Pruess (San Francisco) and Katerina Rohonyan (Baltimore).
Game of the Year
After each round, a game of the week (was Game of the Week ) chosen from the 12 games of the week, the game of the year (was Game of the Year ) selected. The title went to Pascal Charbonneau for his win against Larry Christiansen (Boston) in the fourth round, followed by the wins of Larry Christiansen against Lev Milman in the third round and David Pruess against Blas Lugo (Miami) in the semi-finals .
