Van Dyke played 1980–1985 in various bands ( Gigolo, Yellow Press and others), in whose founding and musical development he was always significantly involved. At the same time he studied teaching at the University of Paderborn (art, English). In 1984 he had his first TV appearance in Jürgen von der Lippe's talent shed. In 1986 he got his first record deal with Metronome . With this label he released the two maxi singles Physical Now and I Do in the following years. Since the great commercial success failed to materialize, van Dyke later changed the record company several times. During the late 1980s and early 1990s, he produced several albums in English in the in-house studio. In addition, the musician, who lived in a shared apartment with Franz Plasa from the band Felix De Luxe (Taxi to Paris), earned his living with dance music, film background music and assignments as a studio musician.

An album followed in 1988 with Michel van Dyke (Chrysalis Records), which was recognized throughout Europe and also hit the charts in France, Canada and Australia. The hit Stuck on you became Michel's first radio song . First TV appearances in afternoon programs followed.

Later came the albums One Life and Reincarnated . One Life was voted one of the 50 best international albums of 1991 by the English music magazine NME. Van Dyke produced Reincarnated together with the internationally renowned Midge Ure. His last English-language album was then Kozmetica in 1996 (RCA). The singles Womanchild and She Said were taken over by MTV in their regular broadcasts. This was followed by a tour of Germany through clubs and smaller halls.

His greatest hits Tell Him (1991 - One Life) and She Comes at the End of the Day (1993 - Reincarnated) were best placed in the charts and also held their own for a few weeks.

During the 1980s and 1990s van Dyke toured with bands like Simple Minds , Oasis , Deep Blue Something , K's Choice , Fury in the Slaughterhouse and Runrig . Van Dyke gave hundreds of concerts in Germany and Europe (France, Russia), and was heard regularly, especially on the radio stations in northern Germany. In 2000 he got work for the first time as a producer and author on various further projects. He composed and produced songs for the German films Anatomie and Crazy as well as for the German-Polish production Herz im Kopf .

At the same time he wrote seven of their greatest successes for the teen band Echt (including where are you now? And you have no love in you ) and won gold records with them , the Bambi (2000), the Golden Europe (Group of the Year 2000) and the German music award Echo (for the best music video). Writing for other artists was not planned and initially only a favor for the producer Franz Plasa , who had been looking for material for his protégés.

After the separation of Kim Frank and his colleagues from Echt , van Dyke's first German-language album Die große Illusion (Polydor / Universal) was released in 2001 . In 2003 van Dyke began working on new songs and a second German-language album. He also performed a tour with the band Paula and his friend, singer-songwriter Bernd Begemann . In 2004 the German-language album Bossa Nova was released (first Orbit / Home label, later Königskinder label). The subsequent tour of Germany, together with Annett Louisan and a little later with Dieter Thomas Kuhn, took him again through the entire republic.

In addition, on the occasion of Hildegard Knef's 80th birthday, van Dyke contributed a song to the album Hildegard Knef - Your songs are different (2005).

In the course of the revival of the German music scene after the turn of the century, several books were written about the protagonists of this upswing. In You and Many of Your Friends / 2 , van Dyke and his music, along with a number of other German musicians, is presented and appreciated.

Producer, arranger, composer and lyricist

Since the early 1990s, van Dyke has worked repeatedly in London. There he met with some producers and arrangers from the music industry (e.g. Mike Hedges - producer of the Cure or Midge Ure). Since then, Michel van Dyke has been appearing more and more as a lyricist, composer, arranger and producer, in addition to his own musical career. He worked for well-known stars as well as German and Swiss up-and-coming artists, including: B .:

Van Dyke made video clips for his hits at an early age, which brought him to TV music programs again and again in the 1980s (Formula One, etc.), long before VIVA and MTV shaped the taste of an entire generation. For the cinematic implementation of his song Rain Probability 100% (2005), he was able to win Markus Wustmann as director and the actors Anna Loos and Jan Josef Liefers . Van Dyke's songs have also been covered by various German groups (Neuser and others).

It is particularly interesting that the American band "The Deuce Project" covered his two hits Du carry no love in you (Stone Cold) and Beginning Again (Starting All Over) in 2003 in English, making his songs successful on the US Market has placed.

In 2005 Michel van Dyke worked as a lecturer in the PopCamp project, a music funding project for outstanding bands from the German popular music segment based in Bonn. Van Dyke coached the bands at PopCamp in the areas of songwriting and composing. Van Dyke was also one of the jurors and coaches of the Band Factory department of the John Lennon Talent Awards, which promotes young artists and accompanies them on their way to professionalization.

In 2006 van Dyke wrote the material for Jasmin Wagner's album Die Temptation together with Bernd Begemann and delivered a summer hit with Men Need Love . When the disc was released a second time in spring 2007, Michel appeared in the bonus section in a duet with Jasmin. In 2007 he was represented with two English compositions on Alone , the first solo CD by his colleague Kai Wingenfelder (singer of Fury in the Slaughterhouse).

Member of Ruben Cossani

Since 2007 Michel van Dyke was also one of the protagonists, the composer, lyricist and producer of the pop trio Ruben Cossani . His colleagues were Konrad Wissmann and Alexander Jezdinsky, who, like van Dyke, mastered several instruments and also took over lead voices in the songs.

In February 2009 the three of them started with their current single Until last night at the Bundesvisions Song Contest by Stefan Raab for the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein and landed on the 8th place. After Ruben Cossani briefly slipped into the top 100 of the German single charts with Bis auf last Nacht (exclusively with downloads), in May 2009 they went on tour with Sasha as a support act in all of Germany's major cities. On August 5th, 2009 Ruben Cossani was awarded the Music Prize of the Association of German Concert Directors (VDKD).

A second album by the band with the title Everything at once was released on September 4th, 2009 after numerous other performances and open air concerts in the summer (Hamburg Altonale, Breminale and many more). Four singles were released from this. Raus , the last single (February 2010), was released together with singer Dr. Renz from the band Fettes Brot recorded.

At the same time as this release, the musicians announced that Leo Lazar had left the band for personal reasons. The new “third man” at Ruben Cossani was now Alexander Jezdinsky. He had already celebrated success with the German punk-pop band Angelika Express and was engaged as a studio musician in a number of bands and solo artists (Nacked Lunch, Niels Frevert and others).

After a long break, the band announced their separation in spring 2012. Most recently she released a live CD and gave a farewell concert on March 26, 2012 in Hamburg (Flying Buildings).

Further solo career

After Ruben Cossani broke up, van Dyke wrote a new solo album, which was released in August 2014. The album was released by Warner Music and received many good reviews. Music for “brains and bums” is often called the CD entitled Doppelleben . It features typical van Dyke ballads alongside ironic, profound pieces about love and getting older. New to van Dyke's repertoire were danceable beats and rap music. Artist friends who, in addition to the outstanding studio musicians, contributed to the album: Swen Meyer (co-producer), Ferris MC (rapper - in a duet with Wegen der Musik ) and Jan Josef Liefers (reads Nordsee , a story penned by van Dyke). After the album was released, van Dyke toured with his band Die Temptation through clubs and halls or worked with befriended bands - such as B. Revolverheld - at MTV Unplugged concerts.

In the summer of 2015, the film Taxi by Karen Duve (screenplay) and Kerstin Ahlrichs (director) was released in German cinemas. Michel van Dyke composed, wrote and sang most of the 18-song soundtrack for this film (the focus is on a taxi driver in Hamburg in the 80s).

Michel van Dyke is also professor of songwriting at the Institute for Jazz, Rock, Pop at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media.
