Thomas Godoj
Thomas Godoj , Polish Tomasz Jacek Godoj , (born March 6, 1978 in Rybnik , Poland ) is a Polish - German rock singer and songwriter . In 2008 he won the fifth season of the RTL - casting show Germany Idol (DSDS).
Career
Life and first steps as a musician
His parents, Danuta and Eugen Godoj, moved to Germany with him and his sister Hannah in 1986 and settled in Recklinghausen in October 1988 . After attending secondary school and passing the technical diploma, he completed an apprenticeship as a technical draftsman . He then took up a degree in civil engineering at the Bochum University of Applied Sciences , which he broke off for music. Thomas Godoj has a daughter and a son.
He took his first musical steps as a singer in bands such as Cure of Souls , Fluxkompensator , Tonk! and WiNK . With the formation Cure of Souls he won the Newcomer Festival in Recklinghausen in 2003. With Tonk! From 2003 to mid-2005 he made German rock music, whose self-written lyrics he interpreted as the lead singer. At the VW Sound Foundation competition , the band reached the top 10 and won a sponsorship award.
From 2005 to May 2007 Godoj was a singer in the band WiNK . In April 2007, the group played on the Coca-Cola Newcomer Tour at a concert by Adam Green in the Muffathalle in Munich with rock songs like Liebe zur Sonne , Winterkinder or Still .
In the summer of 2007 Godoj applied as a candidate for the talent show Deutschland sucht den Superstar , in which he made it through to the finals with a decidedly rocking selection of songs. In every show, he received the most votes by far. In the final he played against Fady Maalouf on May 17, 2008 and won with 62.20 percent of the audience votes; the win was linked to a record deal with Sony BMG . In the beginning Thomas Godoj was managed by the RTL juror Volker Neumüller , from whom he separated after a short time because their "philosophies" did not match. Since then he has been acting independently of Dieter Bohlen and RTL.
Musical success
His debut single Love Is You went straight to number 1 in the singles charts in Germany , Austria and Switzerland in June 2008 . After two weeks he received the first gold record for over 150,000 singles sold in Germany. His debut album Plan A! took first place in the charts in Germany and Austria in July 2008, achieved gold status in the first week of sales and platinum in October 2008.
Also in 2008 he was named Newcomer of the Year at the Jetix Awards and “Favorite Singer” at the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards , and was also nominated for Best Newcomer at the Golden Henne . The Polish-language magazine Samo Życie awarded him the Journalia 2008 prize on October 20, 2008 at the Gwiazd concert in Essen for his contribution to German-Polish international understanding. In 2009 Thomas received the German Echo Music Prize in the “Best Newcomer National” category. In addition, Godoj recorded the song Helden sucht again as an EM song with the German U21 national soccer team.
In November 2009 he released his second album Direction G , which clearly shows his own handwriting. His lyrics deal self-critically with his role as a superstar or try to encourage other people. With direction G also Winterkinder was published, which deals with the topic of child abuse. The very sparsely orchestrated ballad Walking with You , sung in English, puts his voice in the foreground and thus shows another facet of the musician. On March 12, 2010, clock without hours , a poem about the meaning of time, was decoupled .
On 24./25. In September 2011 he shot the music video on roofs of a whole city over the roofs of Berlin . This song was released on October 7, 2011 as a single from his third album So wollt , which was released on October 14, 2011 .
After three studio albums, he released his first live album , Live ausm Pott, on April 20, 2012 , which was recorded on December 3rd and 4th 2011 in Recklinghausen during his tour for the album So wollt .
At the beginning of March 2013 he shot the video about men are like that together with YouTuber Alexander Böhm , also known as AlexiBexi . This song was released on March 22, 2013 as a pre-single for his album of the same name , which was released on May 31, 2013. The songs are presented on the album in a much more rocky way than intended on the earlier albums in the direction of G and So and are for the first time comparable to the live performances. The songs are socially critical, humorous, self-critical, sing about his love for the pot and deal with previous relationships. At the end of 2013 Godoj started with the first three dates of his V'starker aus show . He presented a selection of songs from his four albums, rearranged acoustically. He was accompanied by Moritz Schuster (piano), Johanna Stein ( cello ), Torsten Bugiel (drums) and Sebastian Netz (guitar).
The album V was financed through a crowdfunding platform. The financing target of 55,000 euros, which was earmarked for the production and promotion of the album, was achieved within 24 hours. In doing so, he set a European crowdfunding record in the music sector. On 26 September 2014 he published as a lead single for the album V the song Magnetic . It was available for download from various portals. On October 24, 2014, V was published in various editions. On Powermetal.de , Thomas Godoj was described as a "great bearer of hope for German-speaking ( hard ) rock " because of this album . This funding campaign in 2014 also enabled him to release the acoustic album V'starkker aus (Das Akustik-Album) on September 25, 2015 under his own label Tomzilla-Musik, which he had previously founded . This is also the reason for the spelling of the title. In analogy to the V of the fifth studio album, the highlighted V in the title of the acoustic album is intended to draw attention to the fact that both can be traced back to this project.
His sixth studio album Mundwerk (album) was also crowdfunded. After the campaign was over on March 26, 2016, almost 187,000 euros were received to cover the costs of producing and promoting the album. The preliminary single Mensch sein was published on July 1st, 2016 on various portals and the video for it was shot on May 3rd, 2016 in Bielefeld by dluxe Media. Twelve naked people with the word "human" painted on their chests in different languages were filmed in a completely white studio.
Like the last two albums, the seventh studio album 13 Arrows (album) , released on May 25, 2018, was crowdfunded. At the end of the financing phase, he had raised over € 207,000 for the new album production. "An amount that no other artist in Europe has yet been able to record and that shows that Thomas Godoj is still supported by a loyal following," said Kai Butterweck from laut.de. in his review.
Tours, festivals and other live performances
After a few appearances at festivals in summer and autumn 2008, Thomas Godoj started his “Plan A!” Tour on December 4, 2008 in Recklinghausen , which took him to 37 concert dates through Germany, Austria and Switzerland until March 2009. Two members of his previous band WiNK also worked in his band: drummer Torsten Bugiel and guitarist Sebastian Netz ; René Lipps as guitarist , Bonny G. Assan as bassist and Daniel Geist on keyboard. At most of the concerts Tom Fronza was a guest musician on the didgeridoo.
On April 4th, 2009 an unplugged concert took place in the Hardrockcafé Cologne. This concert took place for the benefit of the earth-man project of the musician and social worker Sio Steinberger from southern Germany.
Up to 20,000 spectators attended other Plan-A! Concerts at various summer festivals in 2009.
After the release of the new album Direction G , Thomas Godoj started the "Direction G Tour" with his band on December 5, 2009 . Only Tom Fronza was no longer involved.
On January 28, 2010 Thomas Godoj and his band performed together with the Neue Philharmonie Westfalen under the direction of Heiko Mathias Förster in the Ruhrfestspielhaus Recklinghausen. The occasion and purpose of this crossover was a fundraising campaign for the benefit of the earthquake victims in Haiti .
In April / May 2010 the direction G tour continued. In smaller locations, cover songs were completely avoided.
On May 29, 2010 Thomas Godoj appeared in the preliminary program of the World Cup boxing match between Vitali Klitschko and Albert Sosnowski in the Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen. There he presented the song Hand on Heart , published for the 2010 soccer World Cup, for the first time . The song is an adaptation of the album direction G contained piece of eternity , he has rewritten specially with his band for the World Cup of 2010.
On 4th / 5th December 2010 traditionally the Nikolaus concerts took place in Recklinghausen, which this time concluded the direction G tour. On this occasion, the band presented the song No Man's Land , which is socially critical. He himself says:
“In principle, it is about responsibility towards other people. In addition, the song has metaphors from everyday life. "
At the beginning of 2011 there was a new formation in the band. Christian Bömkes , who was already involved in some of Thomas Godoj's songs as a songwriter (also for Laith Al-Deen , Stanfour and others), joined the band as bassist. Like Torsten Bugiel and Sebastian Netz, he was also a member of Godoj's earlier band WiNK , which is almost complete again. Also new are Jörg Weisselberg (guitar) and Wolfdieter Hieke (keyboard). The band opened the tour of the same name for the album So Wollt on December 3rd and 4th 2011 with two concerts in Recklinghausen. During these concerts, film recordings were made for a live DVD / CD. The ten dates in December 2011 were sold out.
At the end of March 2012 there was another reorganization in the band. Christian Bömkes and Jörg Weisselberg left the band to play together with Jeanette Biedermann in the band Ewig . Instead of these two, Sebastian Naas took over the bass and Tobi Born the guitar. At the same time she switched to the classic line-up of a rock band , that is, the basic instrumentation was no longer supported by a keyboard instrument.
In December 2012 the So gewollt tour came to an end with some additional concerts, traditionally also in Recklinghausen. During some of his additional concerts this time there was a duet with the Swiss singer Jaël Malli from the band Lunik . Just as she performed with him during his concerts in Germany, they both sang the song What If I - The Moment together during their tour in Switzerland, which ran simultaneously in November and December 2012. The song had been written a few weeks earlier at a meeting in a Berlin studio by both artists and Luk Zimmermann, guitarist of the band Lunik.
On May 31, 2013, the day of the release of his fourth studio album Men Are So , Thomas Godoj and his band were again on a tour of Germany, which took him all over Germany. It ended after 14 appointments on June 18, 2013.
After the release of his fifth studio album V , he started his tour through Germany again on November 26, 2014. He was accompanied by Torsten Bugiel, Sebastian Naas, Sebastian Netz and, for the first time, by Thomas Spindeldreher. After their first acoustic album was released on September 25, 2015, the band started an acoustic tour on October 9, 2015 in Cologne's Kulturkirche. Places with a special atmosphere have been chosen for this tour. In addition to Torsten Bugiel (jazz drum set) and Sebastian Netz (acoustic guitar), who have accompanied Thomas Godoj since the beginning of his musical career, he was supported by Bianca Preché (violin), Niklas Hardt (cello), Hannes Kelch ( acoustic bass guitar ) on this tour. and Moritz Schuster (piano).
On September 17, 2016, the release concert for his sixth studio album, Mundwerk (album), took place in Haltern am See . After its publication, a German tour followed. The tour of the same name for the album started on November 18, 2016 in Frankfurt am Main and ended on December 11, 2016 in Leipzig . On this tour through 13 cities he was accompanied by Sebastian Netz , Thomas Spindeldreher (both guitar ), Sebastian Heuckmann ( electric bass ) and Olli OZ Schmitz ( drums ).
The release concert for his seventh studio album 13 Arrows took place on May 25, 2018 in the Rohrmeisterei Schwerte pumping station, which went into operation in 1890 . During the summer months, some summer events and especially living room concerts took place, which could be acquired again via crowdfunding for the financing of 13 arrows . The 13 Arrows Tour started on October 5, 2018 in Frankfurt. The concerts originally planned for October 3 in Nuremberg and October 4 in Munich have been postponed to March 2019. As in previous years, he is also on tour acoustically in between . In the interview he says what is important to him:
“We're also on the road with a fingerstyle guitarist who replaces two or three instruments with his guitar. Accordingly, you have to flip songs apart first and arrange them differently. The heaviness of a song must also be conveyed acoustically, regardless of the key. That is of course also the claim that we have and that we try to get on stage. "
social commitment
Thomas Godoj participates in several charitable projects. He gave his first benefit concert on April 4, 2009 in the Hardrock Café Cologne. The earth-man project, for whose benefit the concert took place, takes care of young people from difficult social backgrounds. On June 20, 2009 he performed together with Daniel Geist (wing) as part of the “Clean Winners Charity 2009” in Bad Griesbach , which raised funds for socially disadvantaged children.
Godoj mainly looks after projects to support disadvantaged children. This is why the artist, who is now the Kindernothilfe ambassador, also initiated the crossover concert together with the New Westphalia Philharmonic on January 28, 2010. A check for almost € 42,500 was presented to Kindernothilfe Duisburg. The project School without Racism - School with Courage he also participates as sponsor
Others
The release of his fourth studio album Men Are So in May 2013 led to a collaboration with the Carlsen publishing house . The result is the book Men Are So , which was published on October 2, 2013 . This humorous book aims to answer the 120 funniest questions women have always wanted to know about men. It was presented at the Frankfurt Book Fair on October 11 and 12, 2013 .
