Plan A!
(2008)
Direction G Wanted
(2011)

Direction G is the second studio album by Thomas Godoj . It was released on November 20, 2009 as a CD on the major label Sony Music Entertainment . The title G alludes to the fact that his first album Plan A! , which appeared on July 4, 2008 and was published immediately after its victory in the casting show Deutschland sucht den Superstar , offered hardly any opportunities to bring in your own works. Direction G was created with the help of Thomas Godoj. The title suggests that this album shows where the musical development will go in the future.

Emergence

In preparation for the album, Thomas Godoj invited several songwriters, some of whom he knew personally, to a working meeting in Berlin. For the songs, he gave topics that corresponded to the positive, life-affirming mood of the album concept, and also participated in the lyrics himself. In contrast to the first album, Plan A! predominantly German-language songs. There was also a song in Polish and only three songs were in English.

The cover in bright orange shows a stylized compass with a G in the center, which looks like a labyrinth with ways out and dead ends. In addition to all the texts, the booklet contains some photographs by Feedback Media Design GmbH by Thomas Godoj and one of the entire band.

On this album he describes interpersonal stories and he says:

“Ultimately, I am looking for images that I can convey to people. That's why I really enjoy working with metaphors. "

Not alone is a good mood song that should show that music connects people and that solutions are available even in difficult situations, you just can't give up.

The sequel to the song Plan A! that is on Plan A! -Album with which he processed his victory at the casting show is star cut . With this song, he even questions the cult of star for some, but what matters most to him is that he ultimately has no control over his career as a musician. “This is an airplane that I can fly, but not control” it says in the text and in the second stanza: “This world is so crazy. But what happens if she ever sends me to the devil? "

The song Zehn-Meter-Brett is about the fact that you often bend the world into shape and not make the jump from it. In his opinion, this affects a lot of people.

The slogan for the rock song Everything that doesn't exist is: Don't let it bend, but be open to new things . Don't stop, but jump over its shadow. This song was written by the band members during the Plan A tour and many were able to hear it in the live version as part of the tour, both "with electricity" and in the acoustic version .

Cocoon is a very soulful ballad with a lot of metaphors. "Every little seed along the way, carries something bigger and it's growing every day, so come whatever may": in every seed there is something that develops, whatever arises from it, "Every little step along the way, takes you somewhere else and new, so don't you be afraid and step out of the shade “: Things take time until fear is overcome and you step out of your shadow, free yourself from your cocoon.

Bit of Eternity has the style of a hymn both musically and lyrically . "Let yourself be carried away by the sound of the melodies, fade out whatever happened today", are formulations that arouse positive feelings, which is typical for a hymn. About this song “ Stückchen Ewigkeit ” he said to Smago, the online magazine for German music: “... if the fans like it, the fans give us an energy that is indescribable, that embraces you in such a way that you really say: This is it what we have been working for the last few years. I hope that when people go home they will take a bit of eternity with them. ”On the occasion of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa , this song was rearranged (under the title Hand on Heart ) and rewritten. In addition to the official World Cup theme song, which was sung by Shakira in 2010 , there was a World Cup song contest in Germany in which Thomas Godoj and his band took part. He presented the song live on May 29, 2010 in the opening act of the World Cup boxing match between Vitali Klitschko and Albert Sosnowski in the Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen.

The song Winterkinder has existed since 2006. At that time Christian Bömkes did an internship in a special school as part of his special education studies and became aware of this topic. He then wrote this song together with Thomas Godoj. After the first YouTube videos appeared with the then band Wink , they received a number of letters from those affected who thanked them because it would have helped them. These positive reactions have in turn meant that this actually very tough topic was now on the album.

Zwykła Miłość or translated simply love is a song about a vagabond and a princess. The song should make it clear that love is just stronger than anything else. Thomas Godoj met Robert Gawliński in Warsaw to write a song with him in Polish. Robert Gawliński is the singer and songwriter of the Polish group Wilki, which has been very well known in Poland since the early 1990s.

Music video

The music video for Not Alone pays homage to its fans. The band drove around the town hall of Recklinghausen on a low loader and played for the fans. Godoj called on his fans via YouTube to come to Recklinghausen. This action was supported not only by the fire brigade, public order office and technical aid organization , but also by Mayor Wolfgang Pantförder .

The music video for Uhr ohne Stunden by Johannes Grebert , a poem about the meaning of time, tries to capture exactly this atmosphere. The video shows facets of a concert day, Thomas Godoj singing on stage or bowing with his bandmates, but then also scenes in which he looks thoughtfully over the roofs of a city or a look behind the stage and then back to a concert scene switch.

trip

Direction G-Tour on May 2, 2010 in Frankfurt, from left: Sebastian Netz, Thomas Godoj, René Lipps , Torsten Bugiel

The direction of the G -Tour began with 10 concerts in Germany in December 2009 and was continued in the spring of 2010 with another 19 concerts in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, which, as in December 2009, were largely sold out. At these concerts he works with visuals and a projector for the first time. Especially during the presentation of the song Winterkinder , data from the organization “Dunkelziffer eV”, which takes care of sexually abused children, was projected onto the wall with these media.

resonance

Computerbild.de says that “many songs are also very personal, almost autobiographical”. “In addition to driving rock songs, there are also some ballads that are sometimes really touching. These are not only greasy like the somewhat too shallow “Where Did Your Love Go Wrong”. With “clock without hours”, however, he really has something to say. "We're just no longer used to the fact that time is worth it," sings Godoj there - almost moving words of deceleration in a time that is primarily moved by speed. "

Matthias Reichel from the music portal cdstarts.de is of the opinion that “it quickly became clear that the target was not the fast hit single, but the album as a whole.” He sums up: “The ear is still on the English Godoj 'Used to, but with this album the man from Recklinghausen seems to be on the right path, even if it will be a long time before he can compete (not only commercially) with the greats of the German pop scene. "

The internet music magazine cdstart.de attended one of the concerts in December 2009 and recorded its impressions. You write that immediately after the start of the concert it became clear that it did not seem to be a concert by a single artist with a band in the background, because they presented themselves as a band structure that harmonized very well both humanly and musically. Although rock songs dominated the evening, the singer's vocal variability was particularly evident in the few quiet songs. The band also presented some pieces in the acoustic version , which received great applause and of which, in the opinion of the audience, there should have been a few more pieces.
