Men are like that is the fourth studio album by Thomas Godoj . It was released on CD on May 31, 2013 by the record company SPV Recordings . After he had to make a lot of compromises with Plan A in 2008, the albums in the direction of G and So wanted to have much more of his signature and also reminded of his roots before his victory at DSDS in 2008 , this purely German-language album is much more rocking than its predecessors .
Emergence
He wrote the songs together with different songwriters. Thematically, it's about things that are currently moving him. But not only purely autobiographical, but he also tackles socially critical issues on this album.
The album Men Are So is available in two versions. In addition to the studio CD, there is also a limited first edition with an audio book . The audio book, which is read by Thomas Godoj and Andrea Ballschuh , includes excerpts from the book Men Are So , an interview with Thomas Godoj and, based on the title track, a “dispute with girlfriend”.

The cover shows Thomas Godoj naked behind a headless mannequin he is hugging. At the top left is the title of the album in large, irregularly drawn letters in red. Above it is the Godoj logo as well as his name. The background is white with a few non-dominant blobs of beige to gray color. Nils Eichmann is responsible for the design and illustration of the entire booklet. The booklet itself contains all the lyrics and photos that match the illustration (photographer Julia Scheibeck), for example a kiosk in Bochum to illustrate the Ruhrpott hymn or pictures of his father's youth to embellish the lyrics to his life story.

This album also consists exclusively of German-language songs. The lyrics are socially critical, humorous, self-critical, sing about his love for the pot and deal with previous relationships.
My last shirt is about a lost friendship. “To end this once and for all, I had to write it off my heart,” explains Thomas Godoj. There is, as he says, a lot of emotional steam in this song. He wrote this song as well as some others on this album together with Phil Schardt (producer, songwriter and bassist ) and Tom Olbrich (producer and songwriter). Both work together with Eisblume and Andreas Bourani , among others .
With Wo wir sind there is also a Ruhrpott anthem for him on the album. This song is about cohesion, which in terms of content stands for many areas and which is also essential for the miners in particular. Mining is a synonym for the Ruhr area and its culture. Godoj himself also has his personal connection to mining, as his father worked for many years as a mining engineer underground. He himself worked as a technical draftsman for an engineering office that mainly provided designs for the mining industry.
Thomas Godoj likes to work with metaphors, as in Ich catch the rain . Peppered with metaphors like: "all the fears not far - often so difficult to forgive - but I will lose this gravity - the ice will thaw, will lead me to me", the song reveals the attitude to life that one can cope with adversity you can cope better with fate if you approach life positively.
Sterne deals with the subject of suicide. The basis is a true story that touched him a lot, that he wanted to translate it into a song. It is written from the perspective of an unsuspecting friend. Lines of text like: “I hadn't understood anything, didn't see anything, didn't notice that you were torturing yourself, how could I have overlooked that. Can you hear me? ”Give an idea of the desperation that the partner who remains behind feels.
With What if he tells the life story of his father, who actually wanted to be an actor, which, as the song describes, didn't work. This song is about missed opportunities that you mourn, but maybe it should have been or as the chorus sums up: “What if our steps were the only true ones, we would know what it means to live when nothing something else happens. "
Autobiographical is also just plain different . Similar to some of his earlier songs, which were about quick fame and star cult, but also about the fact that as a musician you have no control over your career, Godoj sums up his life so far in Simply Just Different . He rearranges what happened around quick success and the burden of fame. His conclusion in retrospect is that nothing is “pointless”, but “just different”. He wrote the song together with Stavros Ioannou (producer and composer), who works as a producer for Missy Elliott and Michael Bublé , among others
"Have lost sight of each other for too long, but I've known you for so long, as if we were born together. Tell me, is there a new wrinkle there on your face? ”These are the first lines of text from a paper plane . Life threatens to lose its lightness over the years and then you sit together, remember, understand each other and the lightness comes back for a moment, like a “paper plane” or as the song says: “Tell us old stories, and it all comes back, at this moment we scratch our luck again. "
While working on this album in the studio, he met Jaël Malli and Luk Zimmermann from the Swiss band Lunik . The band was founded in 1997 and now mainly plays pop and rock music. The result was the duet What if I - The moment that carries the message of having the courage to seize opportunities that arise.
Wolken is a socially critical song that addresses the “sins” of humanity: “Another scandal and that so shortly before the election - nobody thought of that” or “The church has no desire - so it never knew anything”. Despite all the listed “sins”, the song gets a twist through the metaphor that the gods, whose view is blocked by the clouds, don't even notice it. The song ends with the conclusion : "If the gods could see us - there would be no plagues that sweep our countries - because they would really know how to forgive".
In the humorous title song Men Are So , he admits to his alleged male deficits, that is, he sings about the clichés that men are often accused of by their wives. He wrote this song, as well as several others on this album, together with Alexander Freund. He is the singer and songwriter in the German alternative rock band P: lot , but also writes songs for other bands, for example Silbermond .

Music videos
The video for the single Men Are So directed by Alexander Böhm (also known as AlexiBexi) was filmed in early March 2013 in the Arriba adventure pool , Norderstedt and in the Rabatzz adventure and toboggan center, Hamburg . You can see the band there raging and making music. In between scenes are repeatedly faded in in which you see a young woman and a young man, played by Alexander Böhm, who are obviously arguing about the male character traits that have been sung about. Thomas Godoj accompanies this story disguised as a penguin. You can see him as such during the band scenes, while his band members are disguised as horses.
trip
The tour of the same name for the album traditionally started on May 31, 2013 in Recklinghausen and ended on June 18, 2013 in Lübeck . Like all his previous tours, this tour was organized and promoted by the booking agency Four Artists. The live performances showed the skills of the band even more than before with many solos . As in 2012, he will be accompanied by Torsten Bugiel , Sebastian Netz , Sebastian Naas and Tobi Born. In the humorous song Men Are So , in addition to a kazoo , a ukulele is used, which is played by Tobi Born. deutsche-mugge.de , which "wants to offer sophisticated and valuable music from Germany, or rather German-language music, a worthy platform", attended one of his concerts. The author Torsten Meyer found it difficult “to pick any highlights from the program, because there were quite a few of them. Maybe no man's land ”, which for Meyer is one of the strongest Godoj numbers. "Here he takes a critical look at our society, which is indifferent in many ways, and packs the whole thing into a rock number dominated by thundering guitars". His résumé: “a really great concert by a man who deserves to get more attention with his music. It is multi-layered, powerful, but still unsmoothed German rock with intelligent lyrics ”.
Press reviews
The metal portal Metalglory is of the opinion that if you can think outside the box and approach men with an open mind, you can look forward to a timeless, honest rock album on a high level. The CD is fun, surprisingly good and certainly completely different from what you would expect. The author begins the review with the title track Men Are So , which is at least as bad for him as the title suggests. What is worse, however, is that this single suggests something that the album does not offer the listener. Instead, there would be a great German-English dark ballad in a duet with Jaël Malli , which would be in no way inferior to collaborations that are known in terms of atmosphere and quality, such as those of Nick Cave / Kylie Minogue . Also a brisk piece like My Last Shirt , in which Godoj shows that he can rock and also achieve a degree of hardness that would be in the range of bands like Revolverheld . Finally, Metalglory assesses: "The great strength of Godoj, namely his distinctive, dark, emotional timbre comes into its own particularly well on this cleanly produced album, especially in the quieter moments."
For the music and lifestyle magazine Pressure, Men Are Such an honest and down-to-earth album, which would not be innovative, but a normal pop-rock album à la Revolverheld or Silbermond . The author writes: “The only really rocky and loud number that can stand out from the rest is my last shirt . Apart from this song, unfortunately, only the single of the same name on the record brings fun with it - despite the long-established theme of 'men'. "
Christian Reder from deutsche-mugge.de rates this album very positively. He writes: “The musician brings the content across honestly and believably, and there we are already at the point: The songs all have a message - no trace of irrelevant Bla Bla Bla. His voice also clearly stands out from those of other singers in our music scene, which also answers the question of recognizability. To be honest, I am positively surprised by this CD, which is an interesting complete work not only in terms of content, but also in terms of presentation. For my taste, the CD doesn't have a single missing track or filler material. ”“ Even if there are cracking guitars and intros played in Hendrix's style, the focus of “Men are so” is on more reflective and ballad-like pieces. "
Others
The release of the album led to a collaboration with the Carlsen publishing house . The result is the book Men Are So , which was published on October 2, 2013 . This humorous book aims to answer the 120 funniest questions women have always wanted to know about men. On 11/12 In October 2013 it was presented at the Frankfurt Book Fair .
