With MOT Slideshow (often with SLS for short) is a supplementary service of digital radio is DAB referred. In parallel to the current program, still images are transmitted one after the other - for example at intervals of half a minute - which are shown on the graphic display of the DAB radio after they have been received in full. In this way, radio providers can transmit additional information to their listeners in graphical form. The images are completely transmitted via DAB, so that apart from an SLS-compatible receiver there are no further requirements for reception. Slideshows are shown on DAB radios with a TFT display, but not on radios with a monochrome display.

Transferred content

Depending on the radio station, images with different content are transmitted, including B. logos , album covers , pictures from a studio webcam , also texts on music tracks or programs or even news and service information.

Some providers only transmit static content, such as a changing station logo with an associated slogan.

Categorized slideshow

Since the still images are transmitted one after the other, a listener may have to wait several minutes until an image with the desired information is received and displayed. In the case of the categorized slideshow ( catSLS ), a provider therefore transmits a category as well as an index number of the image within the category for each image. A corresponding receiving device stores all previously received images in the memory - the listener is able to navigate between the categories and their images via the device and can call up the desired information more quickly. Newly arriving images that are identical in category and index number to an image that has already been saved replace the old image, so that all content is kept up-to-date in this way.

Furthermore, a URL can be transmitted for each image , under which further information can be called up ( ClickThroughURL ).

After the categorized slideshow was presented at IFA 2012, it has been officially specified since the end of May 2013. Since around the beginning of February 2013, the SWR has been transmitting corresponding metadata in its DAB ensembles. In the meantime, most of the other ARD programs and Deutschlandfunk , as well as Schlagerparadies, do the same .

As independent DAB radios, only the TechniSat DigitRadio 300 C and the DigitRadio 500 support the categorized slideshow. In addition, many car radios that are integrated in the factory by the manufacturer support this feature.

technical realization

The individual images can be in either JFIF or PNG format. In the simple profile , a maximum image size of 50 KB is allowed; A resolution of 320 × 240 pixels is generally recommended. The images are segmented and transmitted using the Multimedia Object Transfer Protocol ( MOT ) in the less complex header mode . The MOT packets, in turn, are embedded in the useful data portion ( X-PAD ) of the audio data stream - alternatively, transmission as an independent data service is also possible.
