Reversal potential
Reversal potential referred to in the physiology generally that voltage at which the electric current through a membrane the strength is zero. The name comes from experiments in which an externally applied voltage is varied in order to find the voltage at which the current changes direction. Depending on the context, the reversal potential can be identical to:
- a natural membrane potential
- When examining individual ion channels ( patch-clamp technique ), the reversal potential characterizes the permeability properties of the channel.
- the equilibrium potential according to Nernst, if only one type of ion is present or is being considered.
