Thomas Rückert

Thomas Rückert (* 1970 in Würzburg ) is a German jazz pianist.

Life

Rückert, who comes from a musical family (his younger brother is the jazz drummer Jochen Rückert ), began taking piano lessons at the age of seven; at the age of 16 saxophone and drums were added. From 1990 he studied at the Cologne University of Music with Rainer Brüninghaus and John Taylor , which he completed with the post-graduate course “concert exam”. Between 1991 and 2000 he traveled to India, Africa and North America to study music.

Work stays in New York City , where his brother has lived since 1995, had an impact on the first albums under his own name, which were created between 2002 and 2006 with his trio, initially with his brother and changing bassists ( Dietmar Fuhr , Matt Penman and Matthias Pichler ) was occupied. The albums Debut ( JHM , 2002), Dust of Doubt ( Pirouet Records , 2004) and Blue in Green (Pirouet Records, 2006) were created. At the same time, Thomas Rückert appeared in television and radio productions including the WDR and made guest appearances at festivals such as the Istanbul Jazz Days, the Hilden Jazz Days and the Audi Jazz Festival in Cologne. Foreign tours took him to Balbeck in Lebanon. He performs as a duo with saxophonist Johannes Lemke , including at the Leverkusen Jazz Days ; In 2008 they released their album Jnana on Jazzsick Records Düsseldorf . With Anne Hartkamp he submitted a tribute album to Bill Evans .

His collaboration with Lee Konitz had been important since 2002 and continued in 2016 (with his trio, now with Reza Askari and Fabian Arends , who released the trio albums Meera (2013) and Parvaneh (2015) on Double Moon Records ). But he also works with other musicians and bands such as Ed Kröger , Greetje Kauffeld , Mark Murphy , Kevin Mahogany , Tony Lakatos , Randy Brecker , Adam Nussbaum , Ack van Rooyen , Jay Anderson , John Goldsby and his brother Jochen.

In addition to his work as a jazz pianist, Rückert teaches at the Folkwang University of the Arts and the Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences . He lives in Neunkirchen - Seelscheid near Cologne.
