The Hexenstein in Wallenhorst

The Hexenstein or Dicker Stein is a large boulder in the municipality of Wallenhorst . It is listed as a natural monument in the Osnabrück district .

Location and history

The Hexenstein is located on Im Vogelpohle Street . In the immediate vicinity of the Hexenstein, the federal road 68 is crossed by a bridge over the Ruller Straße. This situation was the Hexenstein's undoing on November 19, 1966, when the bridge, which was currently under construction, collapsed and the not yet set concrete poured over the boulder. The damage caused was put at 200,000 DM and even caused construction delays in the construction of the Hansalinie . After it was almost forgotten, the Wallenhorst community tried to recover the stone in 1997. In a first attempt, the excavator shovel of a 120 hp vehicle from the building yard was bent. Only the third attempt was successful, so that it could be lifted using an 80 t crane. Before it was recovered, the Hexenstein was 20 meters further south on the edge of a pasture. During the rescue, a second boulder was found under the witch stone. This similarly large stone now lies next to the Hexenstein and will have been part of the Hexenstein due to the fact that it was broken. The Hexenstein was placed under nature protection in 1948.

Geology and dimensions

The witch stone consists of red Växjö granite which is 1.7 billion years old. It has the dimensions of 3.80 meters × 2.80 meters with a thickness of 1.40 meters. The circumference of the Hexenstein is 10.7 meters.

legend

According to a legend, its smooth top, formed by the transport in the glacier, is said to have served as a witches' dance floor.
