In 2016, Hiekmann obtained a Master of Arts degree in economic sociology from the University of Osnabrück . She had previously completed a bachelor's degree at the Carl-von-Ossietzky University of Oldenburg with a combination of sociology and German studies .

After completing her studies, Hiekmann started her own agency for communication, text and marketing in her place of residence, Osnabrück .

Blogger

On her food blog schmecktwohl.de , Hiekmann has been publishing reports and background stories from the gastronomy and hotel industries as well as self-developed cooking recipes since 2014 . Some of these appear in other media, for example since April 1, 2014 as the “recipe of the week” in the local section of the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung .

Cookbook author

After taking on the illustrations for another author's cookbook for the Munich publisher Edition Michael Fischer (EMF) in 2015, Hiekmann published the title 1 Pot Pasta ... basta! More cookbooks followed.

In 2016, at the invitation of the world-class chef Thomas Bühner , she completed a two-week internship in the kitchen of the three Michelin-starred restaurant “la vie” in Osnabrück's old town. It was under this impression that she developed the concept for the book Uncovered - The Secrets of Top Kitchen, published by EMF in 2017 . In addition to Bühner, she interviewed the prominent chefs René Frank , Sarah Henke , Paul Ivić , Johannes King , Thomas Martin and Micha Schäfer on the question of what amateur chefs can learn from top chefs to improve their everyday dishes. The title became a bestseller. In 2018 she was awarded the silver medal of the literary competition of the Gastronomic Academy of Germany (GAD) for her work.

In 2018 EMF published the book Nachgefragt - 30 top chefs reveal their kitchen secrets . Hiekmann took up the question of what amateur chefs can learn from professional restaurateurs. She interviewed 30 top and TV chefs from Germany, Austria and Switzerland, each on a specific question, for example how a perfect Wiener Schnitzel or real South Tyrolean dumplings are made or how pâtissiers use vegetables in desserts. In addition to the interviews on the respective topic, the volume contains suitable recipes, some of which have been developed by the chefs involved, but also some by Hiekmann himself. Contributors: Heiko Antoniewicz , Thomas Bühner, René Frank, Sebastian Frank , Benjamin Gallein , Maria Groß , Serkan Güzelcoban, Jan Hartwig , Sarah Henke, Alexander Herrmann , Ingo Holland , Christian Hümbs , Thomas Imbusch, Paul Ivić, Johannes King, Julia Komp , Mario Kotaska , Andree Köthe , Alexander Massenkeil (Kitchen Director at AIDA Cruises ), Ludwig "Lucki" Maurer , Heiko Nieder , Robin Pietsch , Tim Raue , Heinz Reitbauer , Jens Rittmeyer , Alfons Schuhbeck , Matthias Spurk, Sascha Stemberg , Roland Trettl and Andy Vorbusch. For this title, too, she was awarded a silver medal at the GAD literary competition.

In 2019, Hiekmann published the book Aromenspiele in collaboration with the Mainz physicist Thomas A. Vilgis at Christian Verlag in Munich . Real taste buds thanks to perfect food pairing. Based on theoretical scientific findings and interviews with top chefs Ingo Holland, Sven Elverfeld, Nils Henkel , Daniel Achilles and Andreas Rieger, as well as using suitable recipes, the question of which foods can be sensibly combined in cooking and why this is so is investigated.

In the same year EMF published Hiekmann's book Koch was draus! What top chefs conjure up from 5 ingredients. Once again, it is about building bridges between top and everyday cuisine. For this purpose, Hiekmann visited professional chefs in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and gave them the task of creating different dishes from five self-selected ingredients, the level of difficulty of which can also be recreated by amateur cooks. Contributors : Christian Eckhardt , Sascha Stemberg, Thomas Bühner, Benjamin Gallein, Sarah Henke, Andy Vorbusch, Sascha Kemmerer, Mitja Birlo and Tom Elstermeyer.

At the end of 2019, the title Clever Carb: Enjoying healthy without giving up , Hiekmann's first publication by Dorling Kindersley, was published . The book contains recipes that are based on a moderate use of the low-carb diet , as well as thematically appropriate interviews with the doctor Matthias Riedl ( The Nutrition Docs ) and the top chefs Sonja Baumann, Nils Henkel and Tim Raue.
