biography

After graduating from high school, Riedl worked for several years as a journalist for various daily newspapers, including at A. Beig Verlag. He continued this activity for the first few years after starting his medical studies at the University of Hamburg in 1982. After the third state examination in 1989, he completed his specialist training as an internist in what is now the Pinneberg Regioklinik and worked as an emergency doctor. There he founded a center for inpatient diabetes care and training. In 1998 he was recognized as a diabetologist DDG, followed by the specialist nutritional medicine and diabetology ÄK Hamburg in 2000 and 2006. Matthias Riedl works in Hamburg and lives in the Pinneberg district .

In 1999, Riedl was asked to help shape the privatization of the Diabetiker Zentrale Hamburg, an institution of the medical service of the health insurance funds, into a diabetes focus practice. The facility, founded in 1943, had the task of caring for diabetics in northern Germany for decades. In 2007 Matthias Riedl, as founder , sole shareholder and medical director, expanded the practice for diabetics into an interdisciplinary medical care center for diabetology , nutritional medicine , cardiology , psychotherapy , general medicine , ophthalmology , periodontology and geriatrics . (Other subjects: acupuncture , palliative medicine , hypertensiology). In 2016 medicum Hamburg MVZ GmbH had over 100 employees.

Medicum Hamburg participates as an academic teaching practice at two universities ( University of Hamburg and Semmelweis University Asklepios medical School Campus Hamburg ) in student training. As a board member of the Association of German Nutritionists (BDEM), Riedl has been campaigning for better nutritional therapeutic care for people in Germany since 2012. In 2017 he was also elected press spokesman for the BDEM. Since 2010 Riedl has appeared on television and radio stations. In 2012, Riedl, together with the NDR and his colleagues Anne Fleck and Jörn Klasen , conceived the television program The Nutrition Docs , which illustrates the possibilities of nutritional therapy using specific patient cases. The WDR has also been participating in the medical format since 2016 . In 2018 the 4th season of NDR / WDR Nutrition Docs will be broadcast. In 2019, Riedl was awarded the BDEM Therapy Prize by the Association of German Nutritionists for his work in promoting nutritional medicine in public and in health policy.

With one of his publications, the “20:80 Principle”, published by GU-Verlag, Riedl has converted the working methods of his Center for Obesity and Nutritional Medicine into a manual on change management for a healthy diet . In it he describes the concept of "species-appropriate" nutrition that he has coined. Riedl advocates a carbohydrate dosage adapted to the extent of physical activity, a diet rich in vegetables and nuts, and weight- adapted protein dosage . He uses this concept not only to treat obesity , but also to treat type 2 diabetes in remission . He is thus in part against the carbohydrate-heavy recommendations of the German Nutrition Society and the German Diabetes Society.

Matthias Riedl joins the ranks of critics of insulin therapy that is too early - just like Stephan Martin and Nicolai Worm : An effective nutritional therapy is withheld from the majority of German type 2 diabetics. The premature insulin therapy leads to a spiral of excessive weight gain and - as a result - more and more insulin dose increases. This type of treatment increases mortality.
