The Free Evangelical School Lahr (FES Lahr) is a state-approved replacement school in Lahr , which is a privately owned evangelical school and offers training and education according to Christian standards. The school currently employs around 46 teachers and a total of around 575 students , who are spread across 28 classes. The FES Lahr was founded in 1995 and is the only Free Evangelical Confession School in the Ortenau district .

history

In 1995 the "Free Evangelical School Lahr" was founded with eight primary school students. The start of the elementary school was followed by the establishment of a Werkrealschule and a Realschule in the 1998 school year . In addition, there has been a grammar school branch since 2003, which has meanwhile been approved as a G9. The FES Lahr sees itself as a “school under one roof” and, as a network school, is an organizational unit. The school was supported by the Minister of Education, Helmut Rau and Joachim Schwab from the Offenburg State Education Authority.

Sponsoring association

The school is run by the non-profit association “Freie Evangelische Schule Lahr eV”. The association was founded in 1992 by a parents' initiative, initially as a development association. The aim at that time was to found a Protestant denominational school. Today, the school is mainly run by full-time employees. Members of the association can become persons who are committed to the basic declaration of the Evangelical Alliance and want to support the association in its purpose. The association is a member of the Association of Evangelical Confessional Schools VEBS . More than 30 member schools across Germany have organized this association.

aims

The teachers see their task in imparting technical, personal and social skills. This happens within the framework of a Christian understanding of the world. According to its guiding principle, the school proceeds from a "biblical image of man" and takes evangelical faith as its basis; however, it is expressly open to all population groups.

It is about the optimization of the fourfold core business:

  • a fruitful pedagogical relationship between the teacher and the child
  • an efficient lesson
  • a positive school community
  • a credible value and meaning orientation

The guiding principle was the phrase "We educate and educate in the knowledge of origin, purpose and goal" .

School campus

In September 2011 the school bought a 10,544 square meter property on the airfield north of the Hugelmann furniture store, on which a primary school for around 300 children was built. Previously, the lessons took place for 18 years in the former military barracks on the airfield site. In 2014 the new primary school building was inaugurated in a ceremony and celebrated with an open day. The new location is just under 300 meters from the existing school, a sound argument in the gradual implementation of this project. The FES has invested 4.7 million euros in the primary school for twelve classes. Gerhard Hiller, the chairman of the sponsoring association, put the investment for the entire campus at around 17 million euros, plus the cost of a school gym.

Around two thirds of the students have been teaching at the new location since September 2017. In a construction period of just six months, the FES created a new building with seven classrooms and a specialist room for visual arts. The school has taken around 900,000 euros in hand to tackle the new construction and the design of the outdoor facilities on the almost eleven hectare school grounds.

Employee

The school strives for an upbringing and education that reflects a common Christian orientation towards values and meaning in the shared responsibility of school authorities, teachers, parents and students. The saying "It takes a whole village to bring up a child" becomes a guiding principle there.

The little tree in the school logo symbolizes the words from Psalm 1 : “It is like a tree, planted by streams of water, which bears its fruit in due time and its leaves do not wither; and what he does, that works. ”The" seed "was spread in the early 1990s when the sponsoring association for the FES Lahr was founded by committed Christians. Almost 600 students now attend primary school (two-course), Werkrealschule, Realschule and grammar school (each one-course). The maximum class size is 24 students.

Educational mandate

The primary school of the FES Lahr orients itself in the entire school day on the Christian worldview and human image. The students are given the support they need to develop their abilities and skills through the attention, stimulation and communication of the learning content. The school works according to the Baden-Württemberg education plan . Project weeks, excursions, school and class celebrations and various other activities are intended to enrich school life. The primary school offers a living and experience space in which pupils and teachers can work and celebrate together with their parents. Mutual appreciation, consideration, helpfulness and willingness to forgive are practiced at the school. This can create a learning atmosphere that is characterized by acceptance and trust.

Primary school FES

Remedial courses

The school has a structured support concept that is based on the subject-specific requirements of the individual grade levels. The teachers offer year-specific support courses for the subjects German and mathematics. The respective subject teacher decides who should take part in the courses, in consultation with the parents.

  • The support hours take place in the marginal hours, so that no regular lessons are missed;
  • The maximum group size is 8 children;
  • The courses are usually held by the same subject teachers who teach the subject in the respective class level. In this way, content from the lessons can be picked up again and discussed in a smaller study group.

Project weeks

At least one project week takes place every year. During these days the students should deal extensively with a topic and grasp it in different ways with all their senses. In the 2015–2016 school year, all primary school classes performed the musical “This earth is your garden”.

Werkrealschule

The Werkrealschule of FES Lahr is designed according to the specifications of the new Werkrealschule profile of the state of Baden-Württemberg . The aim is a solid, usable general education, which over a 6-year course also leads to an intermediate level. The balance between instruction and self-employment ensures the imparting of job-oriented basic knowledge in German, mathematics, English and the profile subjects. In grades 8 and 9, lessons are given in elective subjects (health and social affairs, nature and technology, economics and information technology) depending on the interests. A qualification is possible after class 10 (secondary school leaving certificate) or after class 9 (secondary school qualification).

Experiential education

"Developing self-confidence, taking responsibility, being able to confide in others" are the goals of the regular educational activities in the Werkrealschule classes. The pupils in this type of school receive special support here. The teachers implement experiential education u. a. by staying in the Austrian castle Klaus, where the classes are guided through challenging borderline experiences (overnight stay in the open air, climbing garden, crossing a river, etc.) during their one-week stay at the school camp and can learn to stand together and trust each other.

Career planning

Main building of the FES

As part of career planning, the FES supports students in following the training path that suits them and on which they can invest and develop skills. The school gives young people a deeper insight into training courses and occupational fields and encourages them to reflect on their career aspirations on this basis. In order to achieve these goals, in addition to various activities, the following was firmly anchored:

  • Internships in grades 7 and 8;
  • Close cooperation with the employment agency and individual advice at the school from the career counselors;
  • Attendance of career information fairs in the region ( BIM in Offenburg, Beruf & Co in Lahr, information day building training in Bühl, etc.);
  • Actions in cooperation with the educational partners from the economy;
  • Internal career information fair with companies from the region on the school premises.

Actions

The parcels will be brought to Romania at the end of November and passed on to the children there with volunteers from the Christian Center Oltenia and other volunteers.

secondary school

The FES secondary school provides in-depth and extended general education. English is the first foreign language (from grade 5). In addition to technology and the subject "Man and the Environment", French is a compulsory elective from year 7 onwards. The intermediate educational qualification creates the prerequisites for professions with high demands on willingness to perform, independence and responsibility or for educational pathways up to university entrance qualification. Confidence in life and love of peace, ability to relate and responsibility are aspired attitudes.

Themed projects

Like all secondary schools in Baden-Württemberg, the topic-oriented projects are an essential part of the profile of the secondary school at FES-Lahr. They form a separate class of lessons that are taught over a period of two hours in a special time window (OTU time).

high school

The education plan of the state of Baden-Württemberg, which leads to the central high school diploma, is also binding for the FES Lahr. The FES Lahr grammar school offers a linguistic and a scientific branch. From the 2012/13 school year, the gymnasium train was converted into a nine-year high school, starting with grade 5. The following applies to all: From class 5, English is taught as a foreign language ; in class 6, Latin or French are optionally added. From grade 8 onwards, the FES high school enables students to choose between the linguistic and the scientific profile: in the linguistic course with the third foreign language (Latin or French - depending on the choice in grade 6) and in the natural science course with the profile subject NwT (natural science and Technology). With the education plan reform in 2004, competence has become a central concept in schools in general. In addition to the knowledge content, it also includes skills and abilities to cope with situations and tasks. At the FES Lahr grammar school, social competence (e.g. ability to work in a team) is given a high priority alongside technical competence (e.g. handling modern media, the ability to present topics that you have developed yourself, structured learning).

Visit to the planetarium in Freiburg , tour of the synagogue in Kippenheim , exploration of the Augusta Raurica settlement, visit to theater performances.

The project days at the beginning of the second half of the school year enable the students to deal creatively with topics that go beyond the content of the lessons. The spectrum ranges from projects on humanitarian engagement (e.g. Syria project, Open Doors ) to interdisciplinary topics (e.g. water project) to musical and creative projects (e.g. theater / plays). On the day of the open house, the mostly creative project results are finally presented to the public.

Roland Rechtsschutz has been committed to the rights of children and young people together with the German Child Protection Association since 2011. In 2016, with the "Raise Your Voice" campaign, together with the musician Ado Kojo, they called on schoolchildren to deal with the topic. The FES class participated with the song " Do They Know " and was the only Lahr school to make it into the top ten in the preliminary round.

Partner schools

The FES Lahr has been in contact with the Amano Christian School (Zambia) since 2005 and with the Établissement Daniel ( Guebwiller in France) since 2007 . The Collège Daniel sees itself as Christian, i.e. This means that it attaches importance to a biblical worldview (biblical integration in the subjects), as well as the formation of the character based on the Christian model. It belongs to two associations: the Association of Christians Schools International (ACSI) and the Association des Etablissements Scolaires Protestants Evangéliques Francophone (AESPEF). As a rule, every student learning French is assigned a pen pal in the first year of learning. In addition, there is at least one meeting each year. From the 8th grade onwards, German-French language stays of at least two weeks are offered. The participants have the opportunity to gain an insight into everyday school life at Etablissement Daniel and the everyday life of the French host family. Oral language skills, but also cultural skills, are fundamentally promoted.
