The Bramgau Route is an approximately 103 km long holiday route in the Bramgau in and around Bramsche in Lower Saxony . Most of the Bramgau route runs through the district of Osnabrück , while a small part touches the south of the district of Vechta . The road is designed as a ring route and is largely located in the TERRA.vita nature and geopark . There are numerous large stone and tumulus graves from the Neolithic and Bronze Age along the way , which are also part of the " Route of Megalithic Culture ".

The route begins in Osnabrück and leads via Icker , Kalkriese , Neuenkirchen-Vörden , Rieste , Alfhausen , Merzen , Voltlage , Neuenkirchen , Ueffeln , Bramsche , Wallenhorst and back to Osnabrück.

The main purpose of the route is to lead visitors to historically significant sites in the Osnabrück region. On the route lies the Kalkriese region as a possible location of the Varus Battle in which Arminius is said to have defeated the legions of the Roman general Varus in 9 AD . Charlemagne founded the episcopal city of Osnabrück in 783 AD and fought numerous battles with Wittekind in the Osnabrück region , witnesses of which include the Karlsteine . Other stops include the ruins of the Wittekindsburg in Rulle , the parish church of St. Johannis in Alfhausen, the Saxon cult sites in Ueffeln or the cloth- making town of Bramsche.
