Pöhlmann has covered a wide range of topics and target groups in his publications. In addition to writings from the theological specialist discussion, the effect on the broader population was a concern of his and so he wrote several works for adult education and community work. As a dogmatist , it was also important to him to make the documents of faith available. Particular mention should be made of his editing of the confessional writings of the Lutheran Church and the translation of the Loci Communes by Philipp Melanchthon .

Probably his best-known works are the Outline of Dogmatics , which has now been published in its 6th revised edition and has become a standard work for generations of students to provide an overview of Protestant dogmatics, and his 8th edition book Who Was Jesus of Nazareth? .

A characteristic of his later works is the emphasis on the dialogical as a constitutive feature of religion. With several partners such as the Marxist philosopher Milan Machovec , with whom he had a long-standing friendship, or the rabbi Marc Stern , he documented the dialogue between religions and ideologies in books.

In addition, he repeatedly intervened in current discourses , for example by creating a draft for a framework plan for the education of the elderly or referring to this position in the church debate about the ordination of women .

Awards

In 2004 he received the Cross of Merit on Ribbon of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic for his services to Christian-Jewish and Islamic understanding.
