activities

Hellen found his way into the media business through an internship at a local newspaper in Bochum. Hellen is the owner of Hellen Medien Projekte GmbH.

Hellen has been the organizer of the annual Steiger Award in the Ruhr area since 2005 . The Steiger Awards are honors given annually to personalities who have shown particular commitment in the areas of tolerance , charity , music , film , media , sport , the environment or the growing together of the European community . Prize winners include Boris Becker , Edmund Stoiber , Vitali & Wladimir Klitschko, Franz Beckenbauer , Silvia von Schweden , Peter Maffay and the former German presidents Roman Herzog and Horst Köhler .

Between 2008 and 2012 Hellen organized the Atrium Talk series of events. In other projects such as the “NRW-Israel Forum” and the “Challenge Future” series of events, the company dedicates itself to charitable purposes to promote dialogue between religions and cultures.

The "Challenge Future" event was founded in summer 2007 in Bochum's Jahrhunderthalle. Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Israeli President Shimon Peres have taken on the patronage . Among other things, Hellen mediates celebrities for various appearances. The project offers workshops with prominent personalities from all areas of public life at seven schools of various types in Bochum. Young people and children have the opportunity to talk to decision-makers, to have facts explained to them and to experience personalities who have made contemporary history up close. The two-hour workshops are held in groups of between 20 and 100 students. Traditionally, the visit of the guest speakers always ends with a network lunch, where the speakers meet multipliers from politics, society, culture, media or sport. Hellen held the last Steiger Award at Zeche Zollverein in mid-March 2019. Hellen came under fire here because he did not make the agreed six-digit down payment to the local company.

criticism

Hellen was party to legal proceedings with the former sponsor Stadtwerke Bochum . Points of contention were the affair over the Atrium Talk and a planned Paul McCartney concert in Bochum. Stadtwerke Bochum terminated all contracts with Hellen and sued the Bochum regional court for repayment of 250,000 euros due to non-rendered services. Since 2007, Hellen has received a total of around 1.6 million euros from Bochum's municipal utilities. Hellen came under public criticism for fees of 25,000 euros for appearances by Peer Steinbrück , the later Federal President Joachim Gauck and other celebrities at the Atrium Talk.

During a press conference on December 13, 2012 in Bochum Town Hall , Mayor Ottilie Scholz announced that, among other things, she would no longer be available as patron for the “Challenge Future” project. In February 2013, Sparkasse Bochum and Hellen jointly announced that they would terminate the existing sponsorship agreement. The core of the dispute was the contractual situation regarding a planned concert by Paul McCartney in 2010 at the RuhrCongress Bochum . Hellen had received advances of 113,000 euros for this concert and not paid it back. According to Hellen, he had flown to London and handed part of the money in an envelope in cash to a liaison officer of Paul McCartney of Pakistani origin. Hellen attributed the failure of the concert to the negative press reports about the Stadtwerke affair in 2012. The Bochum public prosecutor announced on September 3, 2014: “Against the background of the conclusion of the civil law dispute between long-standing business partners, the Bochum public prosecutor, with the consent of the Bochum District Court, closed the investigation against Sascha Hellen on September 3, 2014 in accordance with Section 153 of the Code of Criminal Procedure a possible debt would have to be regarded as too small. ”Also taken into account was the fact that“ there is no criminal record and the possible act occurred a long time ago. ”The municipal utilities only put their repayment claim in February 2014 at EUR 241,560.

On August 12, 2015, the insolvency proceedings for Hellen Medien Projekte GmbH were registered with the Bochum district court, file number: 80 IN 412/15. This procedure was discontinued in mid-September 2015. On July 5, 2017, insolvency proceedings against Hellen Medien Projekte GmbH were again registered at the Bochum district court, file number: 80 IN 335/17. Furthermore, he did not repay Prof. Dietrich Grönemeyer a loan of 150,000 euros.

As part of the Steiger Awards 2015, there was a dispute with the award winner Hardy Krüger . He and his wife had been promised the reimbursement of travel expenses for the journey from the USA in the amount of 17,000 euros. However, there was no reimbursement. Kruger later returned the award to Hellen and engaged a lawyer. At the end of July 2019, Hellen was sentenced to two years imprisonment and 200 social hours for fraud in twelve cases and embezzlement in two cases by the Bochum regional court. He is thus considered a criminal record.
