Andrej Plenković (born April 8, 1970 in Zagreb ) is a Croatian politician and former diplomat . He is Chairman of the HDZ ( EPP ) and Prime Minister of the Republic of Croatia since October 19, 2016 .

Life

Plenković studied law at the University of Zagreb . During his diplomatic career he was, among other things, head of the department for European integration, advisor to the Croatian minister for European integration, deputy ambassador to the EU (2005–2005) and deputy ambassador to France (2005–2010). In 2010 he was appointed State Secretary for European Integration by then Foreign Minister Gordan Jandroković . In these functions he played an essential role in the opening up and progress of negotiations for Croatia's EU accession.

In addition to his mother tongue Croatian , he speaks fluent English , French and Italian , as well as some German .

Political career

In 1999, Plenković led the election campaign of the Christian-Democratic candidate Mate Granić ( HDZ ) for the first presidential elections after the death of the first President of Croatia , Franjo Tuđman .

After his mandate as State Secretary for EU Integration, he was elected to the Croatian Parliament in December 2011 and from April 2012 also an observer in the European Parliament . Before joining the EU on July 1, 2013, he was the top candidate on the HDZ list in the first elections in Croatia for the European Parliament. As a MEP, he was Vice-President of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and Chair of the Delegation for Ukraine .

Since July 17, 2016, he has been the party leader of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), where he succeeded the resigned Tomislav Karamarko . After the parliamentary elections on September 11, 2016 , President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović asked President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović to form a new government on October 10, 2016 , which was confirmed by Parliament on October 19, 2016. Like the government of his predecessor, it was a coalition of HDZ and MOST, 8 of the 20 new ministers already belonged to the old government.

From January to June 2020, Plenković will chair the Council of the European Union within the framework of the Croatian EU Council Presidency 2020 .
