Mate Granic
Mate Granić (born September 19, 1947 in Baška Voda , Yugoslavia ) is a Croatian politician .
biography
After attending school, he studied medicine at the University of Zagreb from 1966 to 1971 and then worked as a doctor . In the following years, medical training in the internal medicine department of Dr. Ozren Novosel University Hospital and between 1974 and 1978 at the Vuk Vrhovac Institute of Diabetes and Endocrinology . From 1976 to 1977 he completed postgraduate studies in diabetology and then became an assistant at the Vuk Vrhovec Institute, whose director of the clinical department he became in 1979.
After his doctorate as Dr. sc. he first became an assistant professor in 1982 before becoming a full professor in 1985 . As such, he was also appointed Deputy Director of the Vuk Vrhovac Institute for Diabetes and Endocrinology. In 1989 he accepted a position as full professor at the Medical Faculty of the University of Zagreb and at the same time became its vice dean . In 1990 he was appointed dean of the medical faculty. At times he was also a visiting professor at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich .
Prof. Dr. Granić was appointed Foreign Minister in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Nikica Valentić on May 28, 1993 by President Franjo Tuđman . He also held this office under his successor Zlatko Mateša until January 27, 2000.
In the presidential elections in early 2000 he was a candidate for the Croatian Democratic Union ( Hrvatska demokratska zajednica , HDZ). But he did not get enough votes to run in the runoff election against the subsequently elected President Stjepan Mesić .
Later he founded the small party Democratic Center (Demokratski centar, DC), the junior partner in the center-right - coalition government of Prime Minister Ivo Sanader between 2003 and 2009 was.
He was arrested in 2004 after an anti- corruption task force investigated him for bribery . However, he was released a few days later for lack of evidence.
The Croatian ambassador to Germany, Goran Grlić Radman , is his cousin.
