Marija Pejčinović Burić (born April 9, 1963 in Mostar ) is a Croatian politician ( HDZ ). She was Foreign Minister from June 2017 to July 2019 .

Life

Marija Pejčinović Burić grew up in Ljubuški as the daughter of a teacher couple and graduated from high school at the age of 17. She studied economics at the University of Zagreb from 1980 to 1985 and graduated. She then spent a total of 3 years as an au pair in Paris , London and Salamanca to improve her language skills. From 1988 to 1991 she worked in the foreign trade department of the electrical company Rade Končar .

From 1991 to 1994 she was Deputy General Secretary of the European Movement Croatia (Europski pokret Hrvatska), the Croatian branch of the European Movement International , and until 1997 General Secretary or Director of the European House (Europski dom) in Zagreb . At the same time, she completed her studies at the College of Europe . This was followed by a position in public relations at the pharmaceutical company Pliva .

From 2001 to 2002 she was a member of the negotiating team of the Republic of Croatia for the Stabilization and Association Agreement between the Republic of Croatia and the EU . She then held numerous other positions in the European Ministry and Foreign Ministry, from 2004 to 2008 and 2016 to 2017 as State Secretary.

From 2008 to 2011 she was a member of the Croatian Parliament . After the resignation of the previous Foreign Minister, Davor Stier , she succeeded him on June 19, 2017. On June 26, 2019, Pejčinović Burić was elected as the new Secretary General by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe . She followed Thorbjørn Jagland on September 18, 2019 .
