Miro Kovač
Miro Kovač (born September 20, 1968 in Split , Yugoslavia ) is a Croatian diplomat and politician and former Croatian foreign minister during the reign of Tihomir Orešković from January 22 to October 19, 2016 and a member of the Christian Democratic Party belonging to the European People's Party (EPP) HDZ .
Professional career
He began his career in 1995 in the presidential office of the first President of the Republic of Croatia , Franjo Tuđman , first in his information service.
After 1999 at the University of Paris III (Sorbonne Nouvelle) in the subject History of International Relations with a thesis on the role of France in the establishment of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia doctorate , had he moved to the Department for Euro-Atlantic integration.
In 2001 he entered the diplomatic service . After a post at the Croatian embassy in Brussels, he was transferred to the Croatian embassy in Paris in 2003. In 2004 he became a permanent state secretary in the Croatian Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the leadership of Miomir Žužul . During the tenure of Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović (2005-2008) he was head of the diplomatic protocol. From 2008 to 2013 he was the Croatian ambassador to Germany .
Political career
In 2014, Kovač was appointed spokesman for international affairs by HDZ chairman Tomislav Karamarko . To this end, he was hired to lead Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović's election campaign for the 2014/15 presidential election .
After Grabar-Kitarović's election victory, Kovač played an important role in preparing for the 2015 parliamentary elections for the national-conservative "Patriotic Coalition" around the HDZ.
Croatian Foreign Minister
In the parliamentary elections on November 8, 2015, he was elected Sabor MP. Since January 22, 2016, he has been Minister for Foreign and European Affairs in Tihomir Orešković's cabinet . Zdravka Bušić , a well-known figure in the nationalist movement that has been publicly active against regional cooperation and who fosters the memory of her brother Zvonko Bušić , who has been convicted of terrorism, has been appointed Deputy Foreign Minister .
At the beginning of April 2016, Kovač met the Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz on a working visit in Vienna .
At the end of May 2016, Kovač visited the State of Israel . According to press reports, he claimed in a lecture there, “Croats and Jews have always had very good relationships, with the exception of the period during the Second World War; this was the consequence of the 'great games' [of the great powers], but we take responsibility ”. This formulation caused controversy.
Before and after taking office Kovač was four times guest of the right-wing journalists Velimir Bujanec , which he called " encyclopedists , reconnaissance aircraft " called.
After less than nine months in office, Prime Minister Andrej Plenković appointed Davor Stier as his successor after new elections .
After my time as Foreign Minister
Kovač also won a seat in parliament in the parliamentary elections on September 11, 2016 . There he is now chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee.
