Before that Ivo Stier (born January 6, 1972 in Buenos Aires ) is a Croatian diplomat and politician of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), which is part of the European People's Party . From October 20, 2016 to June 19, 2017 he was Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of the Republic of Croatia in the government of Andrej Plenković .

Life

Before Ivo Stier was born into a family of emigrants from Samobor who settled in Argentina after the end of the Second World War. His mother Liliana Lukac de Stier teaches philosophy at the Catholic University of Buenos Aires , where she worked with the later Pope Francis . He graduated in political science and journalism.

During his diplomatic career within the Croatian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he worked, among other things, in the embassy in the United States and in the representation at NATO . From 2008 to 2011 he was foreign policy advisor to Prime Ministers Ivo Sanader and Jadranka Kosor . In these functions he was particularly committed to Croatia's accession to NATO and the European Union .

He is married and has three children.

Political career

Stier was a member of the Croatian Parliament from 2011 to 2013 . There he was, among other things, Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Policy.

Before joining the EU, he was elected a member of the European Parliament in April 2013 as part of the first European elections in Croatia . He was re-elected in May 2014 . He was the coordinator in the Development Committee.

To this end, he was Secretary for International Affairs at the HDZ until 2014 . Due to differences of opinion, he was replaced by the then HDZ chairman Tomislav Karamarko by Miro Kovač .

After Karamarko's resignation, he became the closest adviser to his successor Andrej Plenković . On October 19, 2016, he was confirmed by the Croatian Parliament as Vice Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of the Republic of Croatia.
