A total of 151 seats

The last parliamentary election in Croatia took place on November 8, 2015. 151 MPs were elected for the eighth legislative period of the Croatian Sabor , 140 in the ten general constituencies, eight representatives of the national minorities and three representatives of the Croatian diaspora . It was the first parliamentary election since Croatia joined the European Union .

The opposition "Patriotic Coalition" (Domoljubna koalicija , DK) led by the resurgent conservative Hrvatska demokratska zajednica (HDZ) won the election with 59 of the 151 seats, just ahead of the coalition "Croatia is growing" (Hrvatska raste , HR), led by the previous ruling Prime Minister Zoran Milanović . "Croatia is growing" received 56 seats, the reform movement MOST ("Bridge") as the third strongest force received 19 seats. Before the election, however, the new party had spoken out against a coalition, which is why the formation of a government was expected to be difficult from the outset. Since three MPs left the Most parliamentary group after the election, the party now only has 16 MPs and could not achieve the necessary majority of 76 seats with either the DK or the HR. Most's proposal to include all three parliamentary groups in the governing coalition was rejected by the DK parliamentary group. Thus, new elections in Croatia at times seemed more and more likely.

The non-party candidate Tihomir Orešković was commissioned by President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović to form a government. He relied on a majority of 78 of the 151 members of Parliament ; He is supported, among others, by the Patriotic Coalition and the Most Party, which agreed on a coalition on December 23, 2015.

Starting position

Previous distribution of seats in the Sabor

In the parliamentary elections in Croatia in 2011 , the center-left alliance Kukuriku, made up of SDP , HNS , IDS and HSU, received an absolute majority of the votes and was able to replace the previously ruling conservative HDZ . Zoran Milanović became Prime Minister . The HDZ under the leadership of Tomislav Karamarko received the most votes in the European elections in April 2013 . In January 2015, Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović (HDZ) was elected Croatia's new head of state.

The 2015 parliamentary elections were influenced by the ongoing economic crisis and the refugee crisis in Europe , from which Croatia, as one of the countries on the Balkan route, was particularly hard hit.
