The Pliva doo (Note: is doo, the Croatian equivalent for limited liability company ) is a major pharmaceutical company and manufacturer of important medicines from Croatia , based in Zagreb . The current director of the company is Željko Čović . The company has several production sites across Europe.
In October 2006 the company was sold to the American group Barr Pharmaceuticals , which now owns 92% of Pliva shares. Previously, the Icelandic Actavis group and Barr fought a month-long takeover battle that Barr was finally able to win. The price was $ 2.5 billion. Actavis' offer was deemed hostile by management, while Barr's offer was deemed fair.
After October 25, 2006 and with the transfer of the share capital, Pliva became an equal partner of Barr Pharmaceuticals. The merger of Barr Pharmaceuticals and Pliva created the world's third largest generic drug company based on total revenue . The company's worldwide headquarters were in New Jersey (USA). The center for the business area in Europe was Zagreb .
The acquisition of Pliva created a global company that produced more than 120 generic drugs as well as 25 private label brands in the US and more than 550 products in Western and Eastern Europe. At the same time, the takeover of Pliva represented the largest American investment ever made in Croatia and the region. Barr announced in a statement that the merger would fill unused capacities. In particular, investments should be made in further research and development, especially of biotechnological drugs.
At the end of 2007 the company had 6,137 employees and achieved sales of HRK 6.37 billion in 2007. Earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) amounted to HRK 832 million, the net result was HRK 707 million.
On December 23, 2008, Teva acquired Barr Pharmaceuticals for US $ 7.5 billion, making Barr and Pliva part of Teva.
