Barr Pharmaceuticals was a US pharmaceutical company headquartered in Pomona , New York . The company was one of the ten largest generics manufacturers worldwide and was listed in the S&P 500 stock index.
The company was founded in 1970 by Edwin A. Cohen and a partner in New York State. In 1972 the company launched its first generic drug . Initially, the company mainly produced antibiotics . In 1997 the company began to invest in the development of its own products, and in September 1998 Barr received approval for the first self-developed product, a contraceptive . In October 2006, the Croatian company Pliva was acquired by Barr Pharmaceuticals.
On July 18, 2008 it was announced that Barr Pharmaceuticals would be acquired by Teva Pharmaceutical Industries , the Israeli world leader in generics, which took place on December 23, 2008.
