Achim Steiner (born May 17, 1961 in Carazinho , Brazil ) is a German-Brazilian politician and Under-Secretary-General at the United Nations  (UN). Until 2016, he headed the UN Environment Program  (UNEP) as Executive Director . In 2017 he was nominated as head of the UN Development  Program (UNDP).

Life

Achim Steiner was born in Brazil as the son of a farmer who immigrated from Germany. He has both German and Brazilian citizenship. He grew up in Brazil and studied philosophy, politics and economics at the University of Oxford . He holds a Masters Degree in Economics and Regional Planning from the University of London . Study visits at the German Development Institute (DIE) in Berlin and at Harvard Business School followed. After completing his studies, Steiner first worked for environmental associations at the local level before starting his work in international environmental protection.

Steiner initially worked for the world's largest nature conservation organization, IUCN, in Washington, DC and Asia, and in 1998 became Secretary General of the World Commission on Dams (WCD) in Cape Town . In 2001 he returned to the IUCN as General Director of the World Conservation Union IUCN, based in Gland , Switzerland .

Director of the UN Environment Program

On March 15, 2006, Achim Steiner was nominated in Nairobi by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan to succeed Klaus Töpfer for the office of Executive Director of UNEP and was elected one day later by the UN General Assembly. He took office on June 15, 2006. On April 22, 2010, Steiner was confirmed in office for another four years. The second appointment period began on June 15, 2010 and ended on June 14, 2014.

During Steiner's tenure, the UNEP budget was expanded from 7 million  US dollars in 2012 to 34.96 million US dollars for the period 2014/2015. This corresponds to 4.5% of the total expenditure of the UN in the period 2014 to 2015. In 2012 he was awarded the honorary award of the German Sustainability Award for his commitment.

Steiner announced his resignation in June 2016. He has accepted an offer at the Martin School at the University of Oxford .

On April 18, 2017, Steiner was nominated by UN Secretary General António Guterres as Administrator of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and subsequently confirmed by the UN General Assembly. Steiner took up his post on June 19, 2017.
