The first mention names a knight Heinz Schrimpf, Burgmann at the nearby Frankenberg Castle near Helmers , who gave two Hufen Land in Ubolderode to Count Johann I von Henneberg-Schleusingen as a fief. As part of the Henneberg heritage, Übelroda with the Salzungen office came to the Wettins in 1583 and from 1680 belonged to the Duchy of Saxony-Meiningen . In 1740 it came partially into the possession of the Landgraves of Hesse-Philippsthal-Barchfeld . The court men of the village were in the neighboring village Wildprechtroda sedentary family Buttlar-Wildprechtoda . Accordingly, Übelroda belonged to the Wildsprechtroda parish.

At the beginning of the 19th century, Übelroda consisted of 21 houses and had 103 inhabitants, of which 14 were farmers, 4 were day laborers and 2 were linen weavers. From 1813, Übelroda belonged to the state territory of the Duchy of Saxony-Meiningen. In his regional studies of the Duchy of Saxony-Meiningen, Brückner mentions not only statistical information on the location but also the close ties to the neighboring village of Immelborn. On the eastern edge of the town there is a stable for cattle that was built in the GDR era. As part of the village renewal, a village community center was built in the Übelroda district, the village square with bus stop and the cemetery at the entrance to the village were redesigned.
