As a southern continuation of the Wartburgallee , it is the most important entry and exit road in Eisenach towards southern Thuringia .

course

The Mariental street begins in Eisenach's southern district at the beginning of the driveway to the Wartburg and leads south to the Eisenach exit near the Drachenschlucht in the direction of Hohe Sonne . The Marienbach runs parallel to the road in the Mariental and crosses under the main road at the entrance to the village.

Buildings

The most striking building in the Mariental is the artificially created Prinzenteich , the northern part of the street is also built on with villas from the listed Eisenacher Südviertel, which are located at some distance from the street on the slopes of the valley. Together with the former excursion restaurants Phantasie and Sophienaue , the street, which is now lined with parking lots for shuttle traffic to the Wartburg, served the tourist infrastructure of the city.

From 1897 to 1953 the first line of the Eisenach tram ran to the Mariental.

The golden M

The golden M

From various points in Eisenacher Südstadt and the Wartburg you can see a monumental gold-plated M in the middle of the Mariental on the hillside. The letter stands for Maria - first name of the Saxon-Weimar Duchess Maria Pavlovna , after whom the Mariental was named. In 1805, the 6.50 meter high M on the eastern slope of the Mariental valley below the anterior Breitengescheid was carved into the rock and ceremoniously unveiled on the occasion of Maria Pavlovna's first visit. It could still be seen well into the 1940s, then grew in the times of the GDR and was largely forgotten. In 2004 it was cleared from the forest, repaired and re-gilded.
