“The city is located in a basin-like valley location, the surrounding mountains in the eastern hemisphere up to 450 m above sea level. Rise above sea level. Bad Liebenstein belongs to the central German mountain and hill country climate, which merges into the German low mountain range in the northeast. The average annual precipitation is 730 millimeters. In the presence of humid air masses and south-westerly winds, the city gets into the congestion area of the Thuringian Forest with cloudy, rainy weather. In the case of a north-easterly air supply, the influence of the hairdryer becomes noticeable. The most common occurrences are fair weather (32% of the year), followed by showers (26%), bad weather (23%) and cloudiness (19%). Summer days were counted 21 times a year, hot days an average of three. Overall, Bad Liebenstein offers mild to very mild climatic stimuli. In the cold season, the climatic stimuli are stronger, but the wind protection of the valley location ensures that only a third of the days are extremely cold . During clear, calm nights, a cold air lake is formed, the drainage possibilities of which through the Grumbach valley are very limited. However, the cold air lake is occasionally destroyed at night by winds blowing down into the valley from the Thuringian Forest. "

history

The development of the places Schweina, Steinbach and Liebenstein as Altensteiner Oberland is closely linked.

As early as October 1, 1923, a large community of Bad Liebenstein was founded for the first time through the merger of Bad Liebenstein, Bairoda, Steinbach, Marienthal and Schweina, which was dissolved again in July 1924. From July 1, 1950, Bairoda and Schweina again belonged to the Bad Liebenstein community, during which time Schweina was officially called Bad Liebenstein 2 . This existed until March 31, 1974. On April 1, 1974 Schweina became an independent municipality again (only the district of Altenstein with the castle of the same name remained with the spa town of Bad Liebenstein), while Bairoda was reclassified to Meimers. On August 13, 1993 Meimers was incorporated into Bad Liebenstein.

From 2000 there were renewed plans to merge Bad Liebenstein, Schweina and Steinbach to form the "Altensteiner Oberland", which was initially rejected in 2004 by a referendum in Schweina. In 2011, the Free State of Thuringia rejected the formation of a rural community from the communities of Schweina and Steinbach without the inclusion of Bad Liebenstein, whereupon on November 2, 2011 the mayors of all three communities concluded a contract on the formation of a unified community . With the Thuringian law on the voluntary reorganization of municipalities belonging to the district in 2012 , the municipalities of Bad Liebenstein, Schweina and Steinbach were dissolved on December 31, 2012 and a new city was formed, which bears the name Bad Liebenstein .

Town twinning

Bad Liebenstein's twin towns have been Melsungen in Hesse since 1990 and Tréon in the French region of Center-Val de Loire since 1992 .

coat of arms

The coat of arms was approved on January 26, 2015 by the Thuringian State Administration.

Blazon : "In red a silver, gold nimbed saint, garment and cuffs bordered in green, holding a green palm branch in the right hand, the left leaning on a silver grate."

The coat of arms was designed by the municipal heraldist Jörg Mantzsch . It shows Saint Laurentius , the patron saint of the Schweina church. Attributes such as steadfastness, loyalty to the people and charity are associated with it. For centuries, the places that belong to the city today were connected to the Sprengel of the Laurentiuskirche, the image of which was used in several seals. With the formation of the unified community, the city took over the name from Bald Liebenstein, from Schweina the coat of arms symbol of Laurentius.

Economy and Infrastructure

Commercial and industrial

Historically, mining was of importance in the area of today's unified municipality, especially around Steinbach and Atterode , with which a grinding industry developed, which has existed in Steinbach to a limited extent to this day. Industrial settlements in the 19th and 20th centuries, especially in Bad Liebenstein (lighting plant) and Marienthal (metal processing industry) were largely shut down by the end of the 20th century and the facilities were demolished at the beginning of the 21st century. Today the city is mainly characterized by tourism, the Bad Liebenstein district is significant as a health resort.

education

In the municipality there are three kindergartens, two elementary schools and the state regular school "Altensteiner Oberland". The TÜV-Akademie Altenstein offers courses and courses in adult qualification. The two closest grammar schools have been the Albert Schweitzer grammar school in Ruhla and the grammar school in Bad Salzungen since the Herzog Georg grammar school in Bad Liebenstein was closed in 2007.

traffic

The federal highway 4 leads north past the Thuringian Forest. The next runs to reach Bad Liebenstein are Waltershausen and Sättelstädt . The two federal highways 19 and 62 lead past the municipality near Barchfeld and can therefore be reached after a few kilometers of the country road.

There are regular bus connections between Bad Liebenstein and Eisenach (via Gumpelstadt ), to Bad Salzungen (via Barchfeld-Immelborn) and via Trusetal to Brotterode . Three lines operated by the Wartburgmobil transport company operate within the urban area :
