The Bad Liebenstein zoo is a small zoo at the foot of the Burgberg in the small town of Bad Liebenstein in southern Thuringia .

history

As early as the 1970s and 1980s, several animal enclosures for fallow deer and deer as well as an aviary were set up in Elisabethpark . But these were abandoned after the reunification in the GDR and visibly deteriorated.

A revival was driven forward in the early 1990s, especially by the then chairman of the tourist association Horst Paukert. On January 6, 1996, a usage agreement was concluded between the association and the spa director for today's site. The first monkeys were purchased and a small enclosure became a reality. On September 29, 1998, the Friends of the Tierpark Bad Liebenstein eV was founded, which has been the sponsor of the zoo ever since.

Today the zoo is a member of the DTG and houses around 260 animals of 60 different species. In addition to porcupines , kangaroos , meerkats , ring- tailed lemurs and various monkeys, iguanas , snakes , turtles and llamas also belong to the population.

In 2009 a green classroom was set up.

Every year in May the big zoo festival takes place in the zoo.
