Bairoda is a district of Bad Liebenstein in the Wartburg district in Thuringia with around 200 inhabitants.

history

Bairoda is located on the upper reaches of the Farnbach, this small tributary flows into the Werra from the right at Herrenbreitungen . Since the late Middle Ages, the river marked a section of the border between the Liebenstein and Wallenburg lords . Later it became the state border between Saxony-Meiningen and the rule Schmalkalden ( Hessen-Kassel , later Prussian province Hessen-Nassau ). This border ran through the middle of today's place. The old border line is still present in the village today through the "Bairodaer Linde" (natural monument) standing by the inn and a Hessian-Prussian boundary stone from the 19th century.

Courtyards were built on both sides of the river. The part on the right bank was called Grossendorf , and in the first third of the 19th century it had 34 houses and farms. The district on the left bank of the river formed the original Beierode (also Bayerode ).

From the outskirts to the Hohe Klinge there is a border fortification system that is partly still clearly recognizable in the area - the “Bairodaer Landwehr”, signs mark the ground monument on the steep slope of the Dorngehege .

In 1860 a villa was built in the village and an extensive park was created around it. This "little Bairoda castle" is now used as a senior citizens' residence.

On July 1, 1950, Bairoda was incorporated into Bad Liebenstein together with Schweina . Both places were spun off on April 1, 1974. While Schweina became independent again, Bairoda came to Meimers . On August 13, 1993 Meimers was incorporated into Bad Liebenstein.

Sights and events

1000 year old linden tree
  • The "Bairodaer Linde", also known as the "1000-year-old lime tree", is located in the center of the village and is the landmark of Bairoda. It used to mark the border between the two small states and their domains. The linden tree was mentioned as a border tree as early as 913. It is not known whether today's tree is still the original from back then or whether it is a replanting in an old place.
  • Below it is the “eagle stone” with the “border eagle” attached to it as a symbol of sovereignty and border mark.
  • The old inn is located directly on the linden tree, in front of which the boundary stone is exactly in the middle and which was divided by the border, i.e. in two "countries". Due to this circumstance, the myth goes around in the village that when the Saxon-Meiningian village policeman called the curfew , one simply switched to the Hessian side in the inn and continued drinking there.
  • The tree itself is a summer linden tree, designated as a natural monument since 1955 , from whose hollow trunk the old, strong branches have broken off, but instead a new crown has formed, which has now reached a height of 16 m again. The age of the tree veteran is given as 700–1100 years.
Bairoda Castle or "Schlösschen"
  • The villa, which is now used as a retirement home, is known locally as a small castle because of its architectural details . It was built in 1860 and sold during the Great Depression in the 1920s. At times it served as a boarding school and home. The building complex with a spacious park has been operated as a retirement home since 1998.
also worth seeing
  • On the Storchsberg, southwest of the village, is the singer's hut with the Bairoda fairground. The mountain offers a good view of the Trusetaler and Brotteroder mountains and is a popular hiking destination for Bad Liebenstein spa guests, as the spa complex is only three kilometers away.
  • On the eastern slope of the Storchsberg is the small village cemetery with the place's memorial to the fallen.
Backhaus festival and tractor meeting
  • Every year on May 1st there is a back house festival organized by the Bairoda fire department . At the same time, a tugboat meeting is organized in front of the fire station, followed by a parade of vehicles through the local situation.

Südthüringer Zeitung (editorial office Bad Salzungen), September 22, 2009, accessed on October 1, 2012 : “In 2000, the Bairodaer Schloss was opened as a care home. Among other things, an elevator was installed in a new extension. On a total of 2000 square meters, there is now enough space for 40 senior citizens who are in need of care and who spend their old age here. The living area with single and double rooms is designed very differently, each resident can also take their own furniture or small items from everyday life into the new living environment, if possible.
