Friedenskirche (Bad Liebenstein)
The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Peace , also called Sophienkirche, is located in Bad Liebenstein in the Wartburg district in Thuringia . The parish Church of Peace is part of the parish of Bad Salzungen-Dermbach the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .
history
The first Protestant church was built by the first Duke of Sachsen-Meiningen, Bernhard I , but his father Ernst the Pious has probably already started it. On September 21, 1684, a small village church was inaugurated in the then small village of Grumbach , which was also intended for Sauerbrunnen. Today there is a war memorial there. The dilapidation of this small village church and the development of the former two villages into a health resort after the repurchase of the Liebenstein rule by Duke Georg I of Saxony-Meiningen was the decisive factor in building a new church. The new church was consecrated on August 18, 1822. But already 50 years after the new building, serious damage was discovered. After years of negotiations to save the church, the renovation of the building began. Charlotte von Prussia had decidedly supported the church building. In 1906 the parish became independent.
Building description
The half-timbered church from 1822 was built in the classical style . It was converted into a neo-Gothic church in 1892 by Eduard Fritze . The transverse, plastered half-timbered building was given a polygonal apse in place of the choir tower .
The following construction measures were initiated, which were intended to simulate a solid construction :
- The tower above the altar was removed to the rest of the roof height.
- Massive buttresses were added to the corners of the building .
- A massive, neo-Gothic church tower was erected to the east .
- Gothic, pointed arched windows were used.
- Above the portal one was rose window installed.
The interior has a flat ceiling and double galleries . The seating is arranged in a semicircle, just like the galleries were originally. Altar and baptismal font from the time it was built. The church was consecrated again on Christmas Day 1892.
The church was named Friedenskirche in 1955 after internal modernization. In 1980 the outside of the church was renovated, and in 1998 the inside was repainted.
Furnishing
What was new was that the congregation sat in a semicircle. Altar , pulpit , baptismal font and organ formed a unit. A patronage box was built into the first gallery for the ducal family .
The former altarpiece hangs on the right side wall. This image dominated the chancel until 1952. It is the representation of the comforting Christ.
In the interior, the cross, the chancel and the church stalls were redesigned in 1955 . In 1971 a new organ was installed in the gallery by Jehmlich Orgelbau Dresden , and in 1994 it was overhauled.
