Cold day is the name for days on which the daytime temperature is consistently low. There are various completely different definitions, so that the term is not very useful for comparison purposes:

    • Days with maximum daily temperature below plus 10 ° C, sometimes also below +12 ° C for the tropics - in German-speaking meteorology, the specification of cold days in this sense is not usual today, heating days are given below +12 ° C or +15 ° C
    • Cold day defined as a day with a maximum temperature of minus 10 ° Celsius, i.e. a day with severe frost . The second definition is also of importance in weather climatology, especially when defining classification systems for weather types, the −10 ° C limit is more interesting than the + 10 ° C limit. In the United States, because of the use of the Fahrenheit temperature scale, other temperature thresholds are generally used for definition.
    • In addition, the designation can also be found for what is defined as a frost day ( lowest daily temperature <0 ° C), or an ice day ( highest daily temperature <0 ° C), or for the mean daily temperature ≤ 0 ° C

Most of the time cold days are spoken of in the plural . Above all, this indicates the number of cold days for a certain period of time, i.e. mostly for a month, a winter or a year.

A completely different use is to generally compare 'cold (colder, too cold)' and 'warm' days, the [too] cold day is then a day on which the daily mean temperature is the respective (long-term) mean temperature was measured for this calendar day, falls below ( cold anomaly ) , the other days are [too] warm days (warmth / heat anomaly ) . This makes a statement about the temperature relative to the (local, long-term) mean temperature, not about absolute values.
