Under a tropical night (at meteorologists also under the symbol Tn20GT known) is understood in the German meteorology one night in which the lowest air temperature of 18 6:00  UTC not below 20  ° C falls. The measurements are taken in a standard weather hut at a height of two meters.

In the relatively cool German-speaking area of Europe there are on average only a few tropical nights per year, for example at the Heidelberg station the long-term average (1981-2010) is 4.5 tropical nights per year, in the inner city of Vienna there are at least 15 tropical nights per year Year registered. Therefore, it is more of an exception. Tropical nights are characteristic of heat waves , in the hot summer of 2003 , for example, 21 tropical nights were recorded for Kehl , 40 tropical nights for the Locarno- Monti station (the warmest place in Switzerland) and 42 tropical nights in the city center of Vienna in summer 2018. As a result of global warming , one assumes an increase in tropical nights in the future or has already noticed it. For example, the climate tables of the Meteorological Institute (MIM) at LMU Munich show an average of 1.7 tropical nights per year for the period from 1982 to 2002. From 2003 to 2018 the number increased to an average of 5.25 tropical nights per year.

From a medical point of view, tropical nights are problematic for people and are particularly stressful for old or physically weakened people.

The term tropical night is not used in the tropics and subtropics ; Depending on the geographical location and altitude, the air temperature there does not permanently fall below 20 ° C at night during the summer months. English expressions such as (Very) Hot night are more common , with significantly different limits.

A date on which the daily maximum temperature is reached 35 ° C or more than desert day or extreme hot day (English Extremely hot day hereinafter).
