Harry Balkow-Gölitzer

Harry Balkow-Gölitzer (born March 11, 1949 in Weilar ; † February 20, 2018 in Berlin) was a German journalist, book author, radio presenter and songwriter. He became known in the 1970s and 1980s as the moderator of the programs Tip-Disko and Beatkiste on the voice of the GDR station . After 2005 he published several books, especially a series about celebrities from different parts of Berlin .

Life

Harry Gölitzer, a native of the Rhön in Thuringia, moved to Berlin-Niederschönhausen in 1970 after completing his schooling and training as a typesetter and machine setter in Meiningen and completing his compulsory time with the NVA in Neustrelitz . Here he later married the daughter of Julius Balkow , who died in 1973 , took her name with him and kept the double name despite the divorce in 1992. Balkow-Gölitzer has a son from this marriage.

Thanks to his mother, who worked for the GDR artist agency, Balkow-Gölitzer quickly became rooted in the GDR music scene. Together with Jürgen Rummel, Balkow-Gölitzer was one of the first full-time “record entertainers in the GDR. In 1972 he took over the editing of the youth program Beatkiste on the voice of the GDR. From 1976 on he presented the newly started show Tip-Disko on the same station until he took over the presentation of the Beatkiste in 1980. He also worked as a copywriter for various rock bands, sometimes under the pseudonyms Gert (or Gerd ) Pfeil and Tom Herbst . Among other things, he wrote the text for the piece Traudl von City , which was published in Germany as the B-side to the hit Am Fenster and achieved gold status in Hungary, as well as texts for the groups Metropol , Dialog , Pankow , Setzei and Keks . Balkow-Gölitzer was the copywriter of the first rock poem in the GDR and was a co-moderator on stage at the Rock for Peace Festival in the Palace of the Republic until 1984 .

In 1984 Balkow-Gölitzer applied for release from GDR citizenship for himself and his family (application to leave the country). This resulted in an immediate professional ban. Until the application was approved in 1988, Balkow-Gölitzer mainly worked on a voluntary basis for the Protestant parish in Berlin-Niederschönhausen. In March 1988 he moved to West Berlin. Here he was initially a freelance journalist and correspondent, working for the broadcaster Free Berlin / RIAS , among others . In 1989 he joined Euro-Radio Saar GmbH and on December 31 of the same year was part of the first line-up in the Saarland's first private radio station, Radio Salü . in Saarbrücken , from the baptism. In 1991 he returned permanently to Berlin and worked for Antenne Brandenburg in the following years until 1996 . Under his leadership, among other things, the program Die Deutsche Schlagerhitparade with more than 200 programs has become the most successful format of the station.

After his radio days, Balkow-Gölitzer worked for various agencies and communication companies. During his engagement at the project agency of the Dahlem domain , he developed the book idea for his first work. In the following years he published a series about prominent residents of various Berlin districts in be.bra Verlag . His last work, "My Life in Three Germany" , however, remained unfinished. In February 2018 he died after a long illness at the age of 68 in Berlin-Lichterfelde .
