Fürstenhagen railway water tower

The former Fürstenhagen railway water tower is located in the Fürstenhagen district of the Thuringian community of Lutter . The station was located at the highest point of the Heiligenstadt – Schwebda railway line , which opened on October 1, 1914, and the steep gradients of which had to be overcome using rack and pinion sections . The steep route increased the steam consumption of the locomotives, so that their water refueling at Fürstenhagen station had to be ensured. On January 20, 1916, a water crane and the 19 meter high water tower were inaugurated, the water tank of which held 25 cubic meters. Parts of the route were destroyed by the Wehrmacht at the end of World War II and not rebuilt, and the water tower was left to decay. In 1991 the station was bought by the state of Thuringia, and the tower was placed under monument protection in 1995 . It was then renovated and opened on September 18, 1996 as the “Old Water Tower” information center of the Eichsfeld-Hainich-Werratal Nature Park . In the information center, the landscapes of the region and the concept of the nature park are presented on four floors.
