history
A Henricus de Bernharderode was first mentioned in a document around 1290. At that time the place belonged to the family of those from Tastungen . The place was affected by severe floods in 1732, 1926 and 1982. From 1815 he was part of the Prussian province of Saxony (Heiligenstadt district). The districts today include the places Ascherode and Rodderode, which have been handed down as desert areas . According to a statistical study, the village of Bernterode had 520 Catholic and 6 Protestant residents around 1840. The patronage of the village was exercised by the noble von Salm-Salm family as landlords, feudal lords and court lords.
One noted a manor, a Vorwerk, 68 houses, 97 stables and barns and a community center. The Catholic Church is a branch of Martinfeld . Sixty school-age boys and 48 girls attended the village school. At that time, the village was operating the Rasch and Kattunweberei, of which three are cotton looms, four are woolen cloth looms and two are linen looms. The overview names other commercial and craft businesses: a wagner, a tailor, three shoemakers, a potash maker, two whitewashers, a barber, two blacksmiths. There is also a brick hut and two peddling shopkeepers, 10 servants and 10 maids. There was a mill that could be used as an oil cutting and grinding mill. Four grocers (victuals) and two innkeepers supplied the groceries. The entire livestock consisted of 43 horses, 1 donkey, 117 cattle, 336 sheep, 56 goats and 84 pigs. The village corridor, including the Ascherode farm , comprised 3131 acres , of which the agricultural area comprised 1532 acres of arable land, 33 acres of garden land, 65 acres of meadows and 27 acres of pastures. Furthermore, 1274 acres of community and private forest and 197 acres of fallow land were named. The yield from poultry and beekeeping was just as significant. The Donnerwettersmühle was damaged several times in the 19th century by storms, and the location was also unfavorable, so the miller's family had to cease operations as early as 1850. The buildings were in a poor structural condition and were therefore torn down, and the square has been a fruit tree and agricultural area ever since.
From 1945 it was part of the Soviet occupation zone, from 1949 the GDR . From 1961 until the turnaround and reunification in 1989/1990, Bernterode was affected by the closure of the nearby inner-German border.
Since 1990 the place belongs to the re-established state of Thuringia. The municipality of Bernterode (near Heilbad Heiligenstadt) was a member municipality of the Ershausen / Geismar administrative community from 1997 to 2018 . On January 1, 2019, it was incorporated into the city of Heilbad Heiligenstadt .
