Günterode is a rural district of Heilbad Heiligenstadt in the Eichsfeld district in Thuringia .

The Günterode district is located five kilometers northeast of Heilbad Heiligenstadt near the federal motorway 38 on a red sandstone plateau of the central Eichsfeld with a rural character. Other neighboring towns are Siemerode in the west, Glasehausen in the north and Reinholterode in the east. The state roads 1009 and 1010 connect the district with the city and the surrounding area.
The highest point in the district is the Georgenfleck with a height of 369 m. The Beber , a right tributary of the Leine , rises directly at Günterode. The Inner German border ran not far to the north and is now the border between Thuringia and Lower Saxony .
history
The village was first mentioned in 1146, it referred to the clearing settlement of a Gundhari or Gunther . Until the secularization , Günterode and the surrounding towns belonged to Kurmainz . Later they were part of the province of Saxony . From the 1950s until the turnaround and reunification in 1989/1990, Günterode was affected by the closure of the nearby inner-German border. In 1992 Günterode was incorporated into Heiligenstadt, and in 2009 537 people lived in this district. Günterode has its own school system from 1736 to 2004.
